Job Description Summary

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the engineering department. In the absence of the Director, the Chief Engineer will assume the administrative, financial and operating aspects of the hotel as they relate to engineering.

Job Description

Principle duties and responsibilities (Essential Functions) include:

  • Directs a team responsible for the maintenance of buildings, including renovations, expansions, and improvements.

  • Contributes to strategic planning, direction, and goal setting for the department or function.

  • Assisting in implementing and developing plans to maintain equipment, property, grounds and other assets in a safe an acceptable state of repair.

  • Supervise and train all engineering staff in accordance with Sonesta's Operating Procedures.

  • Create and post staff schedules, participate in annual budget for the department and assist with financial and labor forecasting.

  • Assist with departmental administrative task to include, payroll requirements, execute third party contracts, requesting of estimates.

  • Create and implement preventative maintenance program for all hotel equipment.

  • Ensure that room maintenance requests are handled in a prompt and courteous manner using Alice and Transcendent.

  • Ensure all repairs comply with internal policies and external regulations.

  • Follow up on all alarms immediately to determine the exact location and cause. Determine emergency status and report findings to Security. Take immediate action as necessary.

  • Ensure all emergency and life safety equipment and systems are inspected, tested and certified.

  • Support and participate in all Sonesta programs.

  • Review all guest and meeting planner comment cards to ensure problems are identified and corrected in a timely manner.

  • Participate in energy conservation and safety programs.

  • Assist with the administration of all vendor contracts under the engineering department.

  • Assist with special projects and renovations.

  • Monitor and maintain monthly utility readings for billing cycles.

  • Ability to work and communicate with Senior Leadership.

  • Ability to anticipate work needs and interact professionally to extend customer service with a professional and pleasant personality.

  • Ability to perform work without direct supervision and handle multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to deliver high quality customer service and responds to customer needs.

  • Ensure uniform and personal appearance are clean and professional; maintain confidentiality of proprietary information; protect company assets.

  • Display daily professional, courteous, attentive, helpful, and positive attitude towards all guests, fellow employees, and managers.

  • Ability to work cohesively with co-workers as part of a team to reach common goals.

  • Responsible for personnel actions including departmental hiring, discipline, and performance management.

  • Perform other job duties as requested by the Director of Engineer and/or General Manager as other job duties maybe assigned as needed.

  • Understanding of Sonesta's company and safety policies and maintain compliance with OSHA, ADA and the health department requirements.

  • Comply with Sonesta Standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations.

  • Ability to perform work without direct supervision and handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Qualifications and Skills:

A candidate for this position must possess the following applicable knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to demonstrate and provide applicable examples to support his/her competency.

  • Ability to proactively communicate and work effectively with hotel staff, corporate, and hotel customers.

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, including dealing with difficult guests.

  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and attention to detail skills.

  • Ability to satisfactorily operate PC Computers, Microsoft Office, related computer software programs, Opera systems and willingness to learn new software systems.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and maintain a high level of performance.

  • Must be able to stand and exert fast-paced mobility for entire shift.

  • Ability to read and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule forms such as safety rules, operating procedures, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write routine reports, track and report activities.

  • Must have valid Motor Vehicle Operators License.

Education and Experience:

  • 5 or more years of Engineering and supervisory experiences preferred.

  • Technical knowledge and practical experience in the following fields carpentry, general construction, locksmith, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, HVAC, & broiler mechanics.

  • Must be familiar with hotel systems and equipment to make repairs within the building/property preferred.

  • Experience in planning maintenance operations for guestroom, public space, building envelope etc.

Work Environment:

  • Must be able work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Physical and office work required.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period. Ability to move over sloping, uneven, or slippery surfaces. Ability to move up and down ladders, stairs, and service ramps.

  • Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

  • Ability to stand during entire shift.

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Expected Hours of Work:

  • Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel.

  • Must be flexible to work various days and various shifts of the week to include weekends, holidays, days, nights and overnight.

  • Ten to twelve hour shifts sometimes required.

  • Regular attendance in conformance with the standards which have been established by the hotel from time to time is essential to the successful performance of this position.

Travel:

  • Some travel maybe required.

Other:

  • Upon employment, all employees are required to fully comply with the hotel rules and regulations for the safe efficient operation of the hotel facilities.

Additional Job Information/Anticipated

Pay Range

$93,000 to $120,000K - Base pay offered may vary depending on various factors including but not limited to job related knowledge, skills, and job specific /overall experience.
