Chief Engineer for the UEC Materials Team



Role synopsis:

Within the Upstream there are four Chief Engineers who are housed in UEC covering the twenty-one (21) Upstream engineering sub-disciplines.

The Chief Engineer for the Materials Team is accountable for Integrity Management and Engineering across all the Upstream in the following seven sub-discipline areas:

1.Corrosion Engineering.

2.Inspection Engineering.

3.Production Chemistry.

4.Materials & Welding Engineering.

5.Pipeline Engineering.

6.Risers & Turrets Engineering.

7.Subsea Engineering.

The Chief Engineer reports directly to the Head of Upstream Engineering who is also the Head of UEC.

Each of the above sub-disciplines is led by a SETA (Senior Engineering Technical Authority) who reports directly to the Chief Engineer. Collectively these SETAs have oversight of 350 engineers in the Upstream distributed across all the operating functions, Technology and S&OR.

Within UEC each of the SETAs has a team of direct reports and these seven teams comprise 70 engineers that include many of the Upstreams most senior engineers and advisors.

Key accountabilities:

  • Owning an independent view of the relevant risk and proactively communicating these to relevant stakeholders.

  • Ownership of discipline health across the Upstream including recruitment and succession planning.

  • Ownership of relevant Technical Practice (ETPs, GISs, etc).

  • Providing the Operating functions with insights and technical support in a timely manner including delivery of strategic focus area activity.

  • Progressive thinking for strategic direction of engineering with a bias for change management to continually improve.

  • Direct supervision of 7 SETAs and responsible for a UEC team of 70 engineers including reporting, budgeting and planning activity.

  • Membership of the UEC Leadership Team.

  • Communicates powerfully and proactively across the Upstream Segment on technical matters at all levels of the company.

  • Pragmatic when balancing technical decisions and operational needs (deliver safe & competitive solutions).

  • Working collaboratively across the BP group to leverage synergies and drive consistency where appropriate.

  • Working collaboratively to achieve BP results ahead of personal goals.

  • Develops & oversees delivery of external engagement strategy.

Essential Education:

  • Engineering or relevant Science degree.

  • Demonstrable status or history of relevant accreditation or equivalent

Essential experience and job requirements:

  • Extensive experience of Integrity Management and Engineering.

  • Experience of working in multiple regions, projects and/or central engineering functions.

  • Proven technical and people leadership of multi-discipline teams.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills with a proved ability to influence and drive decisions without authority.

  • Acts as a role model for the BP values and behaviours and ensuring compliance with HSSE expectations and is a visible ambassador for D&I.
