The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will carry out the mission of Indian River Habitat for Humanity by managing all aspects of fundraising and marketing to meet the strategic and operational goals of this rapidly growing organization. The CDO serves as a member of the executive leadership team, and works together with the CEO, Board of Directors, and department leadership to shape strategy, operational objectives, and resource development targets.

Responsibilities will include establishing, implementing, and evaluating fund development strategies that will meaningfully engage new and existing funders, focusing on new donor acquisition and donor stewardship.

DEPARTMENTAL RESPONSIBIITIES

Plan, manage, implement, evaluate all aspects of resource development and marketing.

Work with the CEO to set annual goals for all aspects of annual giving, major gifts, planned giving, events, volunteers, and grant opportunities.

Develop and implement a comprehensive annual development plan.

Direct cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.

Manage Raiser's Edge CRM by supporting database administrator and retained consultant.

Budget and manage development expenses and revenue targets.

Leadership, management, and accountability for a six-person development team.

Provide staff support for the Board of Directors Development Committee and attend all Board meetings.

PROGRAM SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Annual Giving

Direct and manage all aspects of a comprehensive and strategic Annual Giving Plan, including direct mail and online giving solicitations.

In collaboration with the Development Team, develop and produce high quality materials for the AG plan.

Plan and execute all solicitations with the following objectives: communicating the IRHFH mission, renewing and increasing donor gifts and acquiring new donors.

Use the AG plan to develop a pipeline of prospects for the IRHFH major gifts program by identifying prospects for the next level of giving.

Direct all donor acknowledgements: including written, phone, and in-person stewardship.

Events

Plan, implement, and direct development and stewardship events in order to meet fundraising, donor acquisition, cultivation, stewardship, and community engagement goals as determined in coordination with IRHFH leadership.

Work in collaboration with the Development Team to create and produce event-related materials and promotion.

Plan and direct all event-related invitations, acknowledgements, and stewardship.

Identify new prospective donors through event participation.

Work with Program staff to ensure maximum donor and volunteer engagement at all events, including wall raisings and home dedications.

Grant Opportunities

Support the Grants Coordinator to cultivate, solicit, and steward grant opportunities. Research new prospective grant funders to identify organizations with giving criteria that match the IRHFH mission in order to acquire additional grant revenue.

Major and Planned Giving

Work with the CEO and Board of Directors to foster and steward donor prospects for major and planned gifts, to sustain annual operating needs and to support growth of the IRHFH endowment fund.

Manage grant application processes, updates, and grant reporting.

Ensure regular board communication and approval of necessary grant applications.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Personal warmth, charisma, and energy; a natural preference for collaboration and confidence with people of different backgrounds.

Experience building and sustaining relationships with individuals - employees & volunteers, businesses, community leaders, faith-based organizations, and strategic partners.

Proven ability to build and manage efficient and effective teams.

Advanced knowledge of fund development theories, principles, and procedures.

Effective written and oral communication skills.

Preferred knowledge of donor database system, Raiser's Edge.

Experience in grant writing and management.

Commitment to a high standard of ethics, including but not limited to maintaining a high level of confidentiality with information acquired about IRHFH prospects, donors, and volunteers.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Ability to build meaningful relationships, manage a team and organizational growth. Responsible for planning and carrying out assignments.

The Chief Development Officer is responsible for managing the delegation of work to Development Team members, volunteers, and others to ensure that deadlines and quality control standards are met. Individual works both independently and in a team environment and is responsible for the quality and technical accuracy of the work produced by the Development Team.

COMPLEXITY

Ability to successfully work with multiple stakeholders in different markets in different positions, with a focus on collaboration, alignment, and high service. Strong analytical and communication skills are essential with the ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines and budgetary requirements.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit or stand for long periods of time.

The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment and routinely requires operating standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copier, and fax machine. Occasionally works in outside conditions that can include heat, humidity, and high noise levels.

About 30% of time will be spent traveling to other offices and meeting spaces. IRHFH work culture is one of community and collaboration, based on compassion, diversity, faith, and integrity.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum 3-5 years of successful development experience in non-profit or for-profit organizations, including leadership; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge and experience in Raiser's Edge is strongly preferred.

Ability to lead, willingness to be coached, confidence in situational leadership.

Demonstrated experience in the engagement of volunteers in their work.

Passion and calling to empower families and revitalize communities through affordable homeownership and Neighborhood Revitalization.

Exceptional communication skills and will have a calm and pleasant demeanor when working with a wide variety of people.

Bachelor or advanced degree preferred but not required.
