DESCRIPTION

Provide Subject Matter Expert consulting to collaborate with and coach our Department of Defense customer to Conceptualize, Define Requirements, Design, Develop, Integrate, Test, Install and Implement State of the Art solutions to fully automate warehouse operations for large scale distribution centers.

The Chief Automation and Robotics Engineer will value-engineer solutions that utilize industry leading edge commercial off the shelf warehouse automation equipment to include but not limited to:

  • MHE Hardware and Software
  • Pick to belt systems
  • Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS)
  • Sortation equipment
  • Vertical material lifts and Vertical Lift Modules (VLM)
  • Dimension and/or weight systems
  • In-line strapping machines
  • Mobile material handling lifts or MHE
  • In-line stretch wrap machines
  • Multi-shuttle systems
  • Man aboard wire guided or rail guided MHE systems
  • Robotic part pickers and other MHE robotic systems

Unity Technologies is seeking an experienced Chief Automation and Robotics Engineer to join our Logistics Modernization Integration Services team. In this role, you will leverage your experience and insights gained from delivering warehouse automation systems to help lead us in developing solutions that are both innovative and scalable. We are the only company that holds contracts on both pools to deliver logistics modernization solutions to the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA). DLA is in the process of modernizing its warehouse systems across its 24 major distribution centers world-wide. The projects will encompasses upgrades to nearly all existing material handling equipment and processes. Existing equipment is primarily circa 1995 vintage equipment that was state of the art when originally commissioned. This program will start with the modernization of the DLA Distribution Center at Tinker Airforce Base in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

You will be collaborating with a world-class team consisting of Unity Technologies and its logistics modernization partners and subcontractors.

Key job responsibilities

  • Research, design, implement, test, evaluate and document complex warehouse automation and robotic systems.
  • Assess and interpret customer specifications and develop detailed technical solutions utilizing commercial off the shelf automation equipment. Analyze requirements data and understand key drivers for selecting appropriate automation and mechanization solutions.
  • Develop design drawings in AutoCAD illustrating the floor layout, equipment placement and workflow.
  • Develop electrical system design schematics and control panel layout design.
  • Develop integration interface documentation between the automaton equipment.
  • Develop and guide automated technology selection, integration and implementation.
  • Design supporting communications network infrastructure.
  • Manage communications and action items related to subcontractor material handling equipment and automation installation teams.
  • Optimize warehouse workflows and operational processes.
  • Perform Business Case Analysis, Analysis of Alternatives and Return on Investment for proposed projects.
  • Develop cost estimates for the procurement of equipment, installation, ancillary services and
  • Assist with developing cost models, assumptions and risks for projects; may independently perform once fully trained and for projects under control.
  • Expand knowledge of market developments in area of warehouse automation.
  • Develop or recommend standard operating procedures, work instructions, and related materials. Perform work, time, and efficiency studies, talk with supervisors and employees, and discuss with customers to understand operations. Ensure processes and operations comply with applicable laws, rules and regulations; seeks advice and interpretation when required.
  • Assist with related safety, quality, environmental and related needs as requested or required.
  • Manage communications and action items related to subcontractor material handling equipment and automation installation teams.
  • Design, develop and support selling automation solutions to support new business development. Present solutions to customers.
  • Assist with developing project, improvement, or current/future state proposals or presentations for customers or management; provide information and develop reports as required. Assist with identifying and delivering on project milestones, communicating with stakeholders, removing obstacles and ensuring resources are available.

Required Qualifications

  • Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline; Master’s Degree in related field, preferred.+ 7 years experience in automation engineering, business process engineering, supply chain operations or consulting.
  • 5+ years of relevant broad industry experience developing large scale warehouse automation systems.
  • Knowledge: Subject matter expert for end-to-end Automation Solutions in the warehouse. Knowledge of Fundamental professional industrial or mechanical engineering principles and practices. Understanding of applicable laws, rules and regulations related to area of assignment. Strong practical and analytical skills.
  • Skills: Solution Design Expert with experience in warehousing cost modeling, solution implementation & logistics operations. In depth understanding of the drivers of a good solution in the warehouse environment (a.o. inbound, storage, picking, packing, sorting and loading). Demonstrated experience analyzing, proposing, and implementing Warehouse Automation.
  • Characteristics: Results oriented, good interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate project management information. Ability to identify areas to drive efficiency and operational effectiveness. Familiar with methods of developing and analyzing cost and operational studies. Capable of identifying and communicating potential operational or analytical concerns.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Credentials: Professional Engineering (PE) certification may be required in some areas.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary developments that involve hardware, software, and algorithm co-design.
  • Experience in one or more relevant technical areas: robotics, computer vision, machine learning, sensors, real-time systems, embedded systems, distributed systems, simulation, high-performance scientific computing, or building infrastructure for engineering/science users.
  • Expertise building and testing real-time systems.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year up to $260,000/year. Pay is based on a number of factors including level of job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. UnityTechnologies is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
