CHESS Technician

Equipment Tech V- Band E

Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences & Education

Who We Are

The Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) is an internationally recognized research facility that provides high-intensity x-ray beams and state-of-the-art instrumentation to scientists and students from university, government, and industrial labs around the world. These groups employ CHESS to conduct research in areas ranging from biology, physics, and chemistry to mechanical and structural engineering, advanced manufacturing, environmental science, materials science, and cultural heritage.

What You Will Do

The Equipment Tech V (ETV) position contributes to the research mission of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) by assisting with the development and maintenance of experimental facilities and equipment and determining how to best achieve the necessary research objectives. At times, the equipment tech V will also directly support academic research personnel (students and scientists) in experimental builds, providing insight and best practice recommendations.

The ETV will spend about 50% of their time throughout the year working in the Wilson Lab machine shop. Responsibilities include:

  • Fabricating and repairing precision x-ray components and complete assemblies or parts of sophisticated research apparatus working with a wide variety of materials (including precious metals and rare/expensive materials) and utilizing specialized shop equipment and tools.

  • Constructing components using conventional and computer numerically controlled lathes and milling machines, grinders, drill presses, and other shop equipment.

  • Assisting with maintenance and repair of machine shop equipment as needed.

  • Monitoring safe use of machine tools and assisting users of the Wilson shop as needed.

The remainder of time will be spent performing technical support, including repair and maintenance duties, such as:

  • Working with staff and researchers to assist in designing and constructing complex devices, often starting from a general idea (based on discussions with supervisors, physicists, or other research staff) rather than detailed drawings.

  • Helping build and maintain radiation shielding throughout the lab.

  • Assisting with repairs and performing preventative maintenance of critical x-ray scientific support systems, including but not limited to optics cooling, vacuum, cryogenic, and control wiring.

  • Operating material handling equipment such as forklifts and cranes.

  • Occasionally providing off-hour support for emergency breakdowns.

What We Need

We ask you to submit a cover letter and resume outlining your interest in this position and explaining how your experience and qualifications match the position requirements.

When reviewing your materials and evaluating your candidacy, we will look for evidence of the following:

  • 4 to 6 years relevant work experience

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

  • Dependable work ethic

  • Attention to detail

  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with hand tools and machine shop manufacturing

  • Ability to follow critical procedures and instructions

What We Prefer

Additionally, the following qualifications will be given preference:

  • Associate's degree in a related technical field
