Overview

Element has an opportunity for a Chemistry Supervisor position at the Portland, OR food testing laboratory. The Chemistry Manager is accountable for coordinating client sample testing and turnaround times, review of sample testing data and interpretation of results, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, review and improvement of chemistry methods as well as coordinating chemistry staff workload and schedules.

Responsibilities

  • Operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of HPLC, GC and ICP instrumentation for the analysis of food samples according to AOAC, AOCS, FDA and EPA methods

  • Review and interpretation of results with Quality Assurance, acting as a problem solver and technical expert in making recommendations on data acceptability

  • Work with Quality Assurance to determine acceptable corrective actions for any non-conformance issues occurring within the chemistry department

  • Develop and monitor chemistry section proficiency and training records

  • Develop and monitor chemistry section schedules based on workload and staffing

  • Review standard operating procedures for the chemistry section and develop new analytical methods based on client requests

  • Accountable to meet On Time Delivery and First Time Right goals within the chemistry department

  • Ensure work compliance to ISO 17025 requirements

  • Ensure compliance to all Element Material Technology quality standards

  • Willing to assist in other activities from time to time that may be requested by the Operations Manager to assist in the execution of Element Material Technology annual targets and budget

Skills / Qualifications

  • Have a degree in chemistry or related scientific discipline with at least 5 years of experience

  • Strong troubleshooting skills and knowledge of HPLC, GC and ICP instrumentation

  • Have the ability to lead a team in a fast paced environment

  • Excellent math and computer software skills

Job Summary Develops overall strategy for chemistry program. Standardizes program goals, provides oversight, and subject matter expertise as it relates to power generation's boiler water treatment/chemistry programs and the associated water and steam systems, provides technical expertise in support of power plant maintenance and engineering functions, and provides leadership in improving the overall performance and reliability of the power generation fleet as it applies to water treatment/chemistry and chemical related technologies. Responsibilities * Champion and lead the continued development of a fleetwide chemistry program, to be implemented by plant personnel, based on industry knowledge and EPRI fundamental chemistry programs for Boiler, Heat Recovery Steam Generators, closed cooling water and circulating water systems. * Effectively work with plant operations groups to ensure that samples are obtained properly and per established frequencies, that operating parameters for plant chemistry is understood, and that operating issues are identified, and corrective measures implemented. * Evaluate, recommend, and implement ideas that improve chemical safety/handling processes, systems and culture. Champion the development of the Fleetwide chemistry program budget. Development and management of a fleetwide chemistry 'health' display in PI AF and of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the chemistry program, while being held accountable for program performance. * Ownership of water treatment program quality through development, review and continuous improvement of fleetwide chemistry as it relates to abnormal event/startup/shutdown/operational procedures, calibration standards, health & safety, and maintenance strategy decisions. * With the assistance of the Utility Operations Support Training Group, develop a fleetwide training program for chemistry sampling programs to: take samples, perform analyses, record data, perform calculations, interpret results and manage data and reports. * Provides engineering specification development support and commissioning support for new capital projects that result in modification to or replacement of plant water and chemical systems. * Effective communications across all plant departments including Operations, Maintenance, Planning and Scheduling, Procurement, Instruments and Controls, and Administration. Qualifications * Requires a bachelor's degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or equivalent science/technical degree or other related field experience. * Typically, five or more years of experience with plant and boiler water chemistry programs, specifically demineralized/raw water systems, and chemical injection equipment connected to balance of plant systems.
