Job Description:

The Chemistry Laboratory Manager is responsible for fulfilling a variety of responsibilities within the Chemistry Department. In addition to teaching three Chemistry lab courses per year, the Chemistry Laboratory Manger maintains and accounts for inventory, equipment, and supplies; prepares supplies for student use; maintains the Chemistry stockroom; and completes multiple safety responsibilities.

The Chemistry Laboratory Manager primarily reports to the Department Chair of Chemistry but has secondary reporting responsibilities to the Director of Risk Management/Environmental Health & Safety.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Ensure that laboratory safety procedures are being followed within the laboratories and classrooms.

  • Provide employees and students with personal protective equipment and safety equipment as needed.

  • Manage all Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that are received and make them available to all employees.

  • Barcode and enter all chemicals received by the science departments into CHIMERA.

  • Comply with all EPA regulations with regards to hazardous waste collection and labeling.

  • Collect hazardous waste from Satellite Accumulation Areas and transport to the Central Accumulation Area.

  • Manage EControl Systems - management platform of laboratory refrigerators and freezers.

  • Ensure that safety equipment checks are conducted as required by OSHA regulations.

  • Supervise student workers.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Chemistry Lab Prep

  • Prepare laboratory supplies for several weekly Chemistry courses, including chemicals, solutions, consumables and apparati. Distribution of said supplies to students. Systematic storage of supplies after the completion of each exercise.

  • Maintain student laboratories in an orderly condition.

Teach Chemistry Lab Courses

  • Coordinate, plan, and collaborate with the lead Lab Instructors to develop syllabi for courses assigned each academic year.

  • Develop, deliver, and grade relevant assignments, discussions, tests, and other activities that measure student progress.

  • Evaluate student progress towards specified course objectives.

  • Facilitate classroom instruction using an appropriate pedagogical framework that reflects current practices in the discipline.

  • Teach assigned laboratory sections of courses as defined by syllabi.

  • Provide safe learning environment for the students in the laboratory.

  • Maintain accurate, objective and complete grading rosters for all students within assigned courses.

  • Comply with all related federal, state and local regulatory guidelines including but not limited to FERPA and Title IX.

Chemistry Stockroom Maintenance

  • Maintain the Chemistry stockrooms. Duties include:

  • systematic storage of supplies

  • elimination of obsolete supplies (including chemicals)

  • cleaning glassware and sterilizing materials

  • receiving supplies and entering them into computerized inventory

  • keeping records of inventory

  • being responsible for the overall appearance, function and convenience of the stockroom

  • maintaining safety standards in conjunction with the Chemical Hygiene Officer, including maintaining Safety Data Sheets and inspecting and servicing safety equipment

  • Manage stocks of equipment and chemicals used for instructional purposes, checking with teaching faculty on a semesterly basis for required purchases

  • Maintain equipment including departmental IR's, UV's, GC's, HPLC's and NMR; arranging professional service when necessary.

  • Arrange storage of instruments to prevent theft.

  • Prepare a list of supplies and equipment to be presented to vendors for their bids. Communicating with the vendors, receiving supplies from the successful bidder, and entering the supplies into inventory.

  • Perform miscellaneous duties related to the physical facilities and equipment.

  • Maintain clear communication with all members of the teaching faculty.

The hiring range for this full-time, salaried position is $50-$52K. The anticipated start date for this position is July 10, 2024.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or a related field

  • Willingness to perform a variety of tasks

  • Good organizational skills

  • Computer skills, including use of Excel

  • Ability to work and teach labs during the afternoon lab session between 1:00 and 4:00.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is routinely working in a normal classroom/laboratory environment. The position will work with chemicals and biologicals on a regular basis. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.

Physical Abilities

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Sitting for long periods of time.

  • Some bending and stooping when working with files.

  • Limited lifting involved but not more than 50 pounds at a time.

  • Finger dexterity required for mixing chemicals, preparing the laboratory for educational activities, typing and filing.

  • Ability to work with chemicals and biologicals on a regular basis.
