Apogee Engineering is actively seeking a Chemistry Lab Technician supporting the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, NY. This is an Entry Level position that is perfect for someone who is young in their career or recently seperated from the military. The ideal candidate will be familiar with a chemistry lab procedures, equipment, and basic safety regulations.

What you'll be doing:

  • Setup and maintain undergraduate laboratories, under the direction of Technical Leadership.

  • Prepare and distribute any required solutions and chemicals prior to the execution of laboratory exercises using course documentation. Same materials will be disposed of, in a manner that complies with regulatory constraints after labs have been conducted.

  • Responsibly handle chemicals in a way that adheres to chemical safety regulations.

  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation, calibrating and making adjustments as required. Equipment will be distributed and collected as required for each laboratory exercise.

  • Coordinate repair or replacement of broken equipment on a timeline that does not impact execution of labs. Equipment maintenance may include hardware and software issues.

  • Maintaining the laboratory physical infrastructure; works with Building Commandant to coordinate repairs and upgrades in a way that minimizes impact on the academic and research programs.

  • Maintaining appropriate levels of laboratory equipment and supplies on a timeline that does not impact execution of labs. This involves forecasting requirements and coordinating supply actions.

  • Assist faculty and staff in the supervision of laboratory exercises. This includes pre-laboratory setup and wet-chemistry preparation as well as a presence during actual execution.

  • Work with faculty on changes to laboratory procedures, ensuring that objectives are achieved and inventories of chemicals and equipment support new initiatives.

  • Provide similar levels of support for Outreach activities.

  • Able to lift 60 lbs.

What you'll need to have:

  • High School diploma

  • 3+ years of general professional experience

  • 1+ year of experience working in an academic environment

  • Previous experience working with the military

Work is located in the Department of Systems Engineering, United States Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY. Job Responsibilities: IT Lab Technician Services for the Department of Systems Engineering shall be performed in accordance with the following: The contractor shall perform technical computer systems administration and customer support tasks where state-of-the-art and technology is rapidly changing. The contractor shall be responsible for applying IT expertise and includes feasibility, installation, implementation, management, and administration of IT systems. Work is performed in a complex IT network environment and involves support to multiple logistical sites. The contractor shall provide guidance to department IT personnel and other functional specialists in accomplishing the work. The contractor shall provide support and guidance on installing and operating personal computers, servers, peripheral equipment, and associated software. This shall encompass custom installation and maintenance of hardware and software; investigating and resolving problems arising in the user operation of equipment/systems; preparing and conducting training in system operation; and serving as a point of information for personal computer and server operations. The contractor shall install, monitor, troubleshoot, and repair personal computer hardware components (e.g. hard drives, RAM, CPU and coprocessor chips, various controllers and cards, batteries ad CMOS setup memory, keyboards, monitors, external drive units, CD ROM units, printers, etc.) resolving hardware/software interface problems and communications difficulties between components. The contractor shall work with personal computer users installing, troubleshooting, and providing assistance in using a variety of utility, communication, word processing, database, spreadsheet, and network software. The contractor shall support a variety of IT systems and deploy commercial of the shelf (COTS) and Government off the shelf (GOTS) technologies including Microsoft, Linux, VOIP, email, video teleconferencing, and common desktop productivity tools. The contractor shall respond to a variety of failures, re-image customer workstations as needed and resolve complex problems. This shall includes developing and/or using programs and techniques to isolate causes of problems and user errors. The contractor shall detect damaged or lost files, optimizes disk management, measure system performance, control system security, and/or extend system capabilities to support local requirements. In case of system failure, the contractor shall make quick fixes to restore operations, then analyze problems, develop recommendations, and work with department staff to implement changes. The contractor shall ensure proper operation in all modes for all new equipment procured by the Department and shall complete full function tests of all equipment capabilities. The contractor shall verify connectivity and compatibility of new equipment with existing test equipment and output devices (printers and plotters). When necessary the contractor shall fabricate cables, adapters and other equipment to ensure compatible operation of new equipment. The contractor shall evaluate and integrate new or modified hardware and software into the personal computer workstations, fixed and mobile classroom workstations, common use workstations, and the local area network supported workstations. This shall include making recommendations for departmental hardware and software requirements, evaluation of potential solutions, installation of selected solutions, completion of required documentation, and training of end users. The contractor shall provide assistance to academic program directors, academic course directors, and individual instructors on the effective use of several different major departmental application programs. The contractor shall be able to provide technical guidance for directing and monitoring information system operations to include designing, building, and implementing network systems. Additionally, the contractor shall provide quality control review and the evaluation of new and existing software products. The contractor shall be required to monitor complex technical control facility hardware and software. The contractor shall be able to interface with other IT technical personnel, users, and vendor support service groups to ensure escalation to a point of problem resolution is reached during outages or periods of degraded system performance. The contractor shall be able to direct compilation of records and reports concerning network operations and maintenance, troubleshoot network performance issues, analyze network traffic, and provide capacity planning solutions. The contractor shall write complete detailed project requirements documents for Department leadership approval. The contractor shall assist the Department Chief Information Officers (CIO) SME on all IT-related projects, including networks, and manages projects from inception through operations and maintenance. The contractor shall perform technology forecasting, analyses of technical performance, reliability and risk trade-offs, cost-benefit and cost estimations, and risk analyses for networks and candidate technologies. The contractor shall identify, plan, integrate, test and implement communications and networking solutions that provide effective, modern, secure IT equipment and best practices. The contractor shall support the development of policies, procedures, and test methods to ensure network infrastructure reliability and accessibility as well as to prevent and defend against unauthorized access to networks, systems, and data. The contractor shall manage the purchase, testing, installation, and support of network communications, including systems in support of large-scale systems projects. The contractor shall be required to perform vendor comparison and cost studies in the pursuit of these projects. The contractor shall provide Audio-visual (A/V) planning capability. The ability shall include: troubleshooting and minor repair of the VTC and audio visual equipment, to include minor infrastructure (cable/wire) modifications and repair; and assistance to the government on planning for improvements and life cycle replacements of VTC and audio visual equipment. The contractor shall require access to Security/Program Classification Guide(s) (SCG) and the SIPRNET. In performing this contract, the contractor shall have access to classified information only at the Government Activity, and will receive and generate classified material. The contractor shall be responsible for safeguarding all government equipment, information and property. At the close of each work period, government facilities, equipment, and materials shall be secured by the contractor. Under Government direction, the contractor shall ensure that personnel accessing information systems have the proper and current clearances. This shall include assistance in the management of the G6 portion of the System Authorization Access Request (SAAR) process and the SIPR token process. The contractor shall assist the Government in preparing IA audits, inspections, training, policy and other staff actions.
