Position Summary

This is a full-time, tenure track faculty position beginning January 2019, and continuing with annual nine-month contracts.

About The College: The student body at Green River College is made up of approximately 34% Academic Transfer students, 30% Professional-Technical, 11% Adult Basic Education, 25% Continuing & Community Education. In addition, there are five bachelor of applied science four year degrees offered. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English as a second language, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinos/as, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

Description: The Science Division at Green River College seeks an instructor to teach general, introductory, and/or organic chemistry classes for science majors, allied health/nursing majors, and non-science majors. The Division seeks innovative and creative faculty who are committed to the spirit of active/student-centered learning and who demonstrate this practice in the classroom. The Division encourages collaboration with colleagues to promote student success.

Position Responsibilities

In addition to teaching, responsibilities include student advising, assisting in curriculum development, collaboration with the division, and other college and division professional activities as described in the faculty contract.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in chemistry or a related field.

  • One year (3 quarters or 2 semesters) of experience teaching courses in chemistry at the college level.

  • Desire to teach general, introductory, and/or organic chemistry classes for science majors, allied health/nursing majors, and non-science majors.

  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and abilities.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful college-level teaching experience as the instructor of record, responsible for all aspects of at least one combined lecture/lab course, including teaching lectures, teaching labs, writing assessments, and assigning final course grades.

  • Demonstrated academic excellence.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and successful incorporation of active/student-centered learning into classroom teaching.

  • Demonstrated interest and experience in the use of technology in the classroom.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.

  • Demonstrated ability to work and interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as those with disabilities.

  • Demonstrated commitment and incorporation of green chemistry into the chemistry curricula.

  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills in the classroom and with other professionals.

  • While most classes are held during the day at our main Auburn campus, full-time chemistry faculty may be asked to teach classes at night and/or at the GRC branch campus in Kent during some academic terms.

Supplemental Information

This is a full-time tenure track position beginning Winter quarter 2019, continuing with annual nine month contracts. The salary will be determined according to the candidate's educational background, teaching experience and applicable work experience.

GRC is an agency shop.

Base Salary

In addition to the base salary, a premium for your degree or vocational certificate is included in the contract each year.

Librarians at Green River College design, teach, and assess information literacy classes and provide face-to-face and online reference to students, faculty, staff, and community members. Full-time librarians liaise with instructional divisions and Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) programs; they also maintain physical and electronic collections, Ex Libris Alma/Primo, and the library website. They take leadership roles in library outreach, online learning, and campus-wide initiatives. Librarians continue to support a wide range of pre-college, transfer, and professional- technical programs, as well as the sophisticated research needs of a growing number of BAS Programs and a developing Honors Program. We aim to enhance our support of equity on campus by assisting faculty with Open Educational Resources (OER) projects and continuing to build culturally responsive collections and instruction. We are developing a new media lab to facilitate multimedia student work and seek to increase collaboration with faculty on media literacy curricula. Additionally, we are exploring increasing the number of credit-bearing information literacy classes we offer in response to campus and student demand.
