GENERAL SUMMARY:

This is a highly technical position in an analytical lab-testing environment. The Chemist will be responsible for completing assay analyses of all of our production materials; accurately and in a timely fashion with a high degree of repeatability. The Chemist is also responsible for performing investigative analysis for unknown samples and special projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

? Correlate daily sample requirements with supervisor and melt-room operator.

? Record lot numbers, dates, times, sample information, etc.

? Ability to read, write and communicate effectively

? Math and chemistry skills at a university level.

? Able to set priorities and meet deadlines, ability to multitask.

? Good computer skills.

? Visually check sample condition for contamination, appearance, and for any irregularities.

? Determine which elements are required for analysis and which method of analysis to perform.

? Perform calibration check of balance; weigh samples.

? Analyze samples, utilizing accepted lab procedures including known standards and in-house QC check samples.

? Report timely and accurate assay results to Manufacturing Manager and the Management Team.

? Perform troubleshooting and maintenance of analytical equipment. Troubleshoot analysis techniques and report findings.

? Calculate concentration of each required element and convert to standard reporting. Report results to Manufacturing Manager, melt-room operator or spreadsheets as required.

? Keep lab reports and supplies current.

? Review bar list of incoming silver and gold material, determine sample plans for material and sample shipments.

? Must be able to work weekends, rotating schedules and overtime as needed.

? Ability to effectively lead a team.

? Assist in the evaluation and improvement of existing analytical methods and perform method development.

? Standardize and calibrate instruments and solutions used in analysis

? Perform drift correction and response curve adjustments of OES Instruments.

? Ability to investigate unknown samples to determine what it is or characteristics of what makes up the material.

? Review data of incoming silver and gold material, determine material melt plans, and monitor purity of material pool.

? Ability to research how to neutralize solutions and ability to neutralize solutions.

? Ability to utilize titration equipment and techniques.

? Assist in testing of hygiene, air and water samples for pollution control and environmental purposes.

? All other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

? Must be able to collect data and prepare written reports using precise calculating, and reporting of results.

? Must be able to work safely and stay focused at all times.

? Must be familiar with acids, bases, acetylene, lead oxide, cyanide and all lab chemicals.

? PC skills including word processing, spreadsheets and database software.

? Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment.

? Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. Must also be able to work in a team environment and in problem-solving groups as needed.

? Must be able to properly communicate and get along with co-workers, other departments and supervisors.

? Strong organizational skills and the ability to pay close attention to detail.

? Must maintain good personal hygiene in the interest of protecting the metals.

? Must be able to use drill press and lathe to prepare samples.

? Good working knowledge of basic chemistry, including titration methods, method development, atomic absorption theory, wet chemistry, fire assay theory and techniques.

? Ability to determine analysis of non-routine samples.

? Knowledge of operation of AA instrument or ICP instrument and Fire Assay furnace.

? Ability to do statistical analysis of data sets.

? Developing ability to write or assist in writing of analytical processes and developed procedures into standard operating procedures (SOP).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Requires a Bachelor?s degree in Chemistry, or related field or equivalent job experience. Other required experience includes basic chemistry experience; 2-3 years lab technician experience; experience with precious metals; experience with analytical instrumentation. Must also have a strong background in chemistry and math. 4 years of supervisory experience in a laboratory setting.

Preferred experience includes Atomic Absorption or Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) and Wet Assay techniques. Extensive background in the chemistry and physical behaviors of gold and silver, and their alloys, preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, bend or kneel. The employee is continuously required to use hands and arms to reach, finger, handle, or feel objects and controls. The employee is regularly required to walk, talk and hear.

The employee must regularly lift 35 pounds and occasionally lift 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close peripheral vision, depth perception, color differentiation and the ability to adjust focus.

Seeing: 75-100% of the time.

Hearing: 50-74% of the time.

Standing/Walking/Mobility: 75-100% of the time.

Sitting: 25-49% of the time.

Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling/Bending: 25-49% of the time.

Lifting/Pulling/Pushing: 25-49% of the time.

Must be able to lift 75 lbs. regularly

Grasping, using hands, arms, fingers: 75-100% of the time.

Communication: 75-100% of the time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment is of moderate temperature, sterile environment with a moderately loud noise level, hearing protection is required while working on the manufacturing floor. Gloves must be worn and changed frequently and continuously throughout the day while working with products.
