The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Chemist opening in Topeka. The Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories is seeking an experienced chemist to work with the Toxicology unit. Primary duties are to analyze clinical and environmental samples using ICPMS, CVAA and ICPOES. Chemist will also participate in the development of new testing for wastewater in the analysis of emerging contaminants of public health interest, such as PFAS.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Perform analysis using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) on blood matrices as part of the blood metals testing for the state childhood lead prevention programs. Responsible for analyzing these samples accurately and efficiently using the appropriate approved method. As a part of the analytical duties, prepare reagents; calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation used in analytical procedures; and calculate and record data.

Perform analysis using inductively coupled argon plasma mass spectroscopy (ICPMS) for water matrices. This will entail reagent and standard preparation, calibration, instrument maintenance, and proper documentation. Perform determinations using approved KHEL methodology in accordance with EPA methods using appropriate and approved quality control procedures.

Qualifications

  • Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science, medical laboratory technology or related science field.

  • Licensing & Certification:

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a laboratory science, medical laboratory technology or related science field.

  • Two years of experience in planning, organizing and directing the work of a department, program or agency.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry.

  • Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometry.

  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry.

  • Analytical instrumentation and analysis experience.

  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
