The Chemist will use state of the art laboratory equipment to perform accurate and timely chemical analysis of products/materials and reporting these data in concise laboratory reports.
The role extends to assisting clients in determining the analytical options available and interpretation of data provided.
This individual will work closely with the Group Leader in evaluating, recommending and acquiring new analytical technologies/capabilities to replace or augment the current instrumentation.
The Chemist will maintain the analytical equipment through proper servicing or preventative maintenance in conjunction with manufacturer to maximize up-time.
He/She will review and update test methods used for analytical characterization as needed to maintain an efficient and effective process for meeting or exceeding client's expectations. Ensure proper training of analytical laboratory methods is delivered to staff scientists and technicians as appropriate to foster their CertainTeed career. The Chemist will work with the Group Leader as needed to drive the various testing, safety and 5S programs to completion.
Review incoming technical requests for the Analytical Chemistry Lab and determine proper techniques needed to provide results to support new product development, product maintenance, cost saving projects and plant operations.
Perform analyses, critically analyze data and write accurate and concise reports to respond to clients in a timely manner.
Maintain analytical testing capability by working with Group Leader to evaluate, recommend and acquire new analytical equipment.
Develop/update test methods used for analytical characterization and participate to ASTM, ISO or training activities relative to these methods.
Train co-op, temporary personnel, scientists and technicians as needed to maintain testing capabilities for CertainTeed R&D.
Support progress in the areas of lab safety and 5s by leading and coaching team members as needed.
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or Material Science with up to 2 years' experience in an academic lab or a commercial lab of a major manufacturing company with experience in wet chemical, chromatographic (GC/MS & LC/MS) and spectroscopic (FT-IR and ICP) methods.
Experience with spectroscopic methods (AA, UV and XRF) and thermal analysis methods (DMA, DSC and TGA) of polymeric and inorganic materials is a plus.
Method development and validation experience and training of scientists and technicians.
The Chemist should have superior organizational, communication and critical thinking skills in order to quickly discern the proper path(s) for analyzing products and materials to provide answers to customers at all levels of the business.
The Chemist will not only employ standard CertainTeed, ASTM and ISO methods to supply information, but must be able to develop methods that respond to specific customer needs and problems.
Flexible, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills, which include technical writing and documentation

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
