Job Description:

Work in a team environment in providing basic and applied research efforts for the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, Chemical Biological Center (CCDC CBC), Chemical Sciences Division. Research efforts are targeted in areas of chemical and biological defense and projects are focused in areas of warfighter protection and enhancing national defense capability. Research efforts require the synthesis of chemical compounds to include chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and their pre-cursors and degradation products. Efforts include product characterization and trace -level analytical detection.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Performs chemical synthesis activities in accordance with CCDC CBC defined procedures and protocols. For new techniques and/or synthesis of select agents, work with a team of researchers to design synthesis strategies.

  • Works under the direct supervision of first-line supervisor.

  • Performs analyses and characterization via an array of instrumentation to include Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and GC-Mass Selective Detection.

  • Identifies bulk and trace level reaction intermediates and products

  • Works in a team environment and contribute to technical research reports

  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry with 2+ years relative work experience in chemical synthesis

  • Demonstrated experience in NMR and GC-MS.

  • Demonstrated experience in chemical synthesis and product characterization

  • Must be able to obtain Secret Clearance (US Citizenship required)

  • Must be able to meet qualifications for enrollment into the U.S. Army's Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (C-PRP)

  • Strong communication skills and research writing skills

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, to include an air purifying respirator.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in method optimization of historically low-yield synthesis mechanisms

  • Previous experience in working with chemical warfare agents and/or other toxic industrial chemicals / materials.

  • Method development and method optimization

  • Current DoD Secret Clearance

Located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, our ideal candidate will support the research of novel materials, instrumentation, and method applications for chemical warfare agent (CWA) characterization and fate determination. The Research Scientist will perform tests and experiments in support of principle investigators on multiple funded projects for various Government agencies. Support involves working closely with other members of a multi-discipline team to plan, design, and conduct experiments using characterization and detection techniques. Primary Responsibilities * Functions as a team member with chemists, engineers, biologists, and scientists by performing research with chemical and biological warfare material (CBWM) detection and characterization. * Operates and maintains instrumentation for material characterization to include gas chromatography-mass selective detection (GC-MSD) and other analytical instruments. * Executes experiments revolving around the characterization of physical properties of various materials. * Synthesizes, develops, and characterizes nanomaterials and their interactions with chemical warfare material. * Generates test data and contributes to technical report development. * Performs other duties as assigned. Basic Qualifications * Advanced Degree in Chemistry, Biology or other related field with 2-6 years of prior relevant experience * Demonstrated experience in areas of chemical warfare agent characterization, detection, and identification. * Demonstrated experience in synthesis and/or characterization of nanomaterials and polymer composites. * Demonstrated experience in safety and handling of hazardous materials. * Demonstrated knowledge in analyzing and reporting analytical data * Strong communication and writing skills * Ability to work independently with minimal oversight * Ability to wear laboratory personal protective equipment to include air purifying respirator.
