We are looking for capable, innovative, and enthusiastic achievers to join our team and grow with us. We are currently seeking a Chemist for our site in Charleston, TN.

What you will do:

The Chemist will ensure efficient quality control and analytical support for the Charleston, TN site. This position will be responsible for ensuring that analytical methodology is meeting industry and compliance standards, as well as provide support to the routine and non-routine analytical experimentation on an as needed basis. To add, this role will also ensure instrumentation is available for analytical testing of production samples and will work closely with other departments to meet analytical needs of the site.

  • Report into the Technical Manager, Analytics.

  • Perform routine analysis of silicon and trichlorosilane samples using various analytical techniques (particle size distribution, moisture analysis, ICP-OES, GC, FTIR,etc.) under the guidance of standard operating procedures and senior staff members.

  • Prepare samples using wet chemical techniques and ensures that all waste material is disposed of according to plant requirements.

  • Provide analytical support for environmental testing protocols completed by laboratory technicians.

  • Cooperate with the other qualified staff in scheduling and coordinating servicing, troubleshooting and preventative maintenance of instrumentation.

  • Work with senior staff to provide instrumentation validation of any new equipment prior to it being put into service.

  • Participate in devising experiments, troubleshooting problems, and conducts work with supervision.

  • Work with Operations and Process Development groups on scheduling testing and troubleshooting process deviations by participating in the planning, implementation, and control of experiments.

  • Participate in evaluating the chemical and physical properties of various substances, e.g., their applications in products and processes.

  • Participate in identifying and driving opportunities to improve processes in area of responsibility and safety.

  • Communicate results and deviations/observations from non-routine analyses to relevant team members.

  • Accurately record, analyze, and report technical data; communicate results to more senior staff to assist in the development and enhancement of products and processes.

  • Begin to evaluate lab results to understand trends. Learns how to use existing software for evaluation and documentation purposes.

  • Work with senior staff to observes/differentiates between standard conditions and deviations from normal and begins to gain an understanding how this can impact results.

  • Ensure compliance data and paperwork are complete and assist in preparing the lab for audits/inspections.

  • Provide straightforward solutions to problems using readily available references.

  • Learn how to provide technical assistance to other lab employees regarding analytical and data-processing aspects.

  • Inventory management and proper disposal of chemicals.

  • Order needed supplies.

  • Participate in the writing and reviewing of controlled documents such as standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols, and methods.

  • Coordinate external testing with contract labs and invoice management.

  • Learn how to support and develop technicians in all aspects in the lab and set an example in best practices and safety performance.

  • Cross train in other areas of the laboratory and provide additional support, as needed.

  • Actively support the safe operation of the laboratory and provide input for ways to continuously improve the safety culture.

  • Participate in safety investigations and learn how to issue Safe Work Permits (SWP) for the laboratory.

  • Relies on guidance to plan and accomplish goals.

  • Other duties as assigned.

What we need from you:

  • Associates or Bachelor's in Chemistry or a related field.

  • 0-5+ years as a Technician or Chemist

  • Certificates concerning instrument maintenance, preferred.

  • Experience on chemical instrumentation preferred.

  • A team player, who will learn to work with various functions and levels of the organization to motivate and strive for continuous improvement.

  • Follows company policies regarding health and environmental protection, work safety, plant safety, and quality.

  • Safety, detail, and quality oriented; having environmental consciousness.

  • Independent, responsible, well-organized, and a self-starter.

  • Have demonstrated technical and mechanical aptitude and experience in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

  • Express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and individuals.

  • Understand and carry out simple to complex oral and written instructions and maintain confidentiality and integrity.

  • Good communication skills required.

  • Experience in the field of instrumental analysis (ICP-OES, ICP-MS, FAAS, GFAAS, GC-TCD, GC-FID, GC-MS); experience in at least one of the instruments referenced is preferred. ICP-OES or ICP-MS experience is desirable.

  • Entry level knowledge of troubleshooting issues with equipment and processes.

  • This position would be required to cross train in multiple areas of the lab.

  • Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of duties: lab coat, safety glasses, gloves, etc.

  • Exposure to chemicals, such as strong acids and bases, will be required.

  • Able to provide some weekend and holiday coverage on an as needed basis.

  • Knowledge and experience of instrumental analysis preferred.

  • Knowledge of the chemistry and technology associated with the production of polysilicon, preferred.
