Description: The Chemist conducts R&D and product development projects for the Product Development department of Dunn Edwards.

He/she works closely with other members of the technical team to design experiments, develop paint and coating formulations, and test them according to standard protocols. He/she collects and reports data and ensures experiments are conducted in an accurate, complete, and efficient manner. Fundamental skills for the role include ability to communicate effectively, organizational skills, team-work, and observational skills. All work shall be performed with adherence to Dunn Edwards' environmental, health, and safety (EHS) policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The Chemist will have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the practices, concepts, and procedures as it relates to the design, making, and performance testing of paint and coatings formulations.

He/she operates independently and with mentorship and guidance from experienced members of the technical team to understand and execute project assignments in a timely manner. Develop a thorough knowledge of coating raw materials, formulation science, and experimental design. Build a strong understanding of Dunn Edwards products and capabilities, the competitive landscape, and market trends and needs. Occasionally mentor, train, and direct the work of Technicians and Junior Chemists.

Maintain good records, prepare project presentations, and communicate experimental results to the technical team as necessary. Review opportunities for process and product improvements with the Group Leader.

Create and maintain an orderly and professional workspace with adherence to good housekeeping practices. Participate in safety inspections and conduct all work in a manner consistent with safety best practices.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This role has no supervisory responsibilities. The Chemist may occasionally mentor, train, and/or direct the work of Technicians and Junior Chemists.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's degree (B.S., B.A.) from an accredited, four-year college or university; and at least two years of related coatings or other formulation experience; or equivalent combination of education/training and experience.

Experience with Stage Gate Processes and Six Sigma methodologies a plus.

Communication Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively prepare and deliver presentations to a variety of audiences and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, industry professionals, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as statistical analysis, design of experiments (DOE), exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with MS Office. Experience with database systems, project management software, and statistical software preferred.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Additional Information: This role may require some interaction with other departments, including Manufacturing, Quality Control, Regulatory, and/or Marketing to address specific needs.

  • Emergency Response & Evacuation (i.e., 29 CFR 1910.120 and GISO 5192).

Make notes on the specific job duties that are affected by the environmental conditions selected above.

The making of batches requires the use of raw materials and items that have the potential to create airborne particles and fumes. The use of mixing equipment produces some sounds that are considered moderate, as these are small electrical lab mixers.
