Description: BS degree in Chemistry or Engineering.

Preferred 2-4 years experience in an industrial setting. Operation of pilot plant equipment involves adjusting pump rates, performing titrations, setting temperature and ventilation airflow, adjusting/changing feed lines, general maintenance. Operation of the pilot plant equipment involves reading gauges, initializing the flame, adjusting pump rates, clearing out clogged nozzles, recognizing when to adjust temperature & feed rate to meet targets, collecting samples and measuring moisture, accurately labeling all samples produced, submitting containers for physical testing.

Occasional interfacing with field plant sites to solve issues. Completion of ANNUAL preventative maintenance items and participation in ISO 9001 audits as requested and required by the business. Ensuring all measuring devices under ISO 9001 receive their calibration certificates and record keeping.

Working as part of a team to ensure compliance with EH&S safety and housekeeping guidelines. Maintaining an accurate log of all experiments. Maintaining samples in an organized, responsible, clearly marked manner with a focus on quality.

Handling complex tasks. Must show ability to complete 5-10 tasks that may be associated with a given order without supervision. Scale-up recipes from labs to pilot plant.

Ability to regularly lift 20-30 pounds associated with filter press plates, bags of material, canisters, etc. Must be able to wear respirator during some chemical processes. (Characterization, Sample preparation, Separation) Primary Responsibilities * Provide research expertise in novel methods of extraction of REE's from coal and coal byproduct materials. The support will include such methods as; chemical extraction, reactive grinding, and associated characterization. Familiarity with multiple methods is necessary for success. * Utilize solid: liquid and liquid: liquid extractions to recover rare earth elements from coal byproducts, with a goal of obtaining a high lanthanide concentrate. * Provide research expertise with a good understanding of sample preparation, separation, sensing, and characterization methods practiced or under development at NETL. * Responsible for generation of information about types and concentrations of REEs, their associations with mineral and other phases in the materials of interest, and their pertinent physical properties. * Responsible for their independent research effort and providing recommendation to the team for future project direction. * Responsible for the development and evaluation of lab-scale physical, mechanical, and chemical separation techniques to extract/concentrate REEs from coal and coal by-product materials. * An update will be due by the end of each month briefly describing the accomplishments from that month and the next month's forecast. Also, the applicant will include the relevant status of patents, publications or presentations. Reported information concerning publications and presentations shall include full title, author listing and journal or society name. * An update will be due by the end of the quarter briefly describing that quarter's accomplishments. * The candidate will participate in group meetings. Group meetings are designed to allow the applicant to discuss current research and promote discussion with fellow researchers. The manager will request the applicant to provide a PowerPoint presentation for group meetings. The frequency of these presentations is generally once every 6 months but can occur at a higher rate. * The candidate will also participate in sub-group meeting by presenting research plans and recent results in an informal, small group forum on a bi-weekly schedule. Basic Qualifications * This position requires a M.S. degree in either Chemistry, Geology or Chemical Engineering with a focus in REE extraction chemistry. * Extensive chemical instrumentation background. (Inorganic and organic chemical characterization skills, such as: particle size analyzer, SEM, XRD, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, elemental analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis -TGA). * Extensive history of peer reviewed journal articles. (High impact value) * Good presentation record at national and international conferences. * At least 5 years of experience in the field of Rare Earth Metal Extraction * This position will require extensive interface with customers and potential collaborative partners, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. The complexity of information to be managed will require excellent organization skills and an attention to detail. * The candidate should have some leadership experience.
