The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) has a unique opportunity to join our team in Yakima, Washington as a full-time Chemist 1. As a Chemist 1, you will be performing laboratory chemical testing for pesticides on cannabis to support the Washington Liquor Control Board. This non-permanent position is expected to last 12 months, but there is potential to be extended.

The role of the Chemist 1 is to perform routine tests that are highly complex analysis of agricultural food, environmental or input products for pesticides, chemical residues, nutrients, and elements. A chemist is expected to operate and provide support for the analytical instrumentation within the laboratory; including troubleshooting and maintenance tasks through collaboration with vendor engineers and technical personnel. The chemist will abide by the agency hygiene plan to ensure laboratory safety and employ Lean continuous process improvement for efficient workflows.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Prepares various samples for testing.

  • Performs chemical extraction and clean ups.

  • Prepares solvents, standards, and maintains equipment.

  • Operates laboratory instruments such as LC/MS/MS, GC/MS/MS, GC/FID, LC/UV and others.

  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and operates according to the lab ISO 17025 requirements.

  • Ability to create and update procedures for laboratory.

  • Performs data analysis, tracks results within LIMS system, and follows QA procedures.

  • Performs maintenance on laboratory equipment including routine maintenance and simple repairs.

  • Grinding and weighing of samples.


Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with a major in Chemistry or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry.

Desired Qualifications:

Two (2) years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.

This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's License.
