Job Title: Chemical Technician

Location: Watonga, OK

Marathon Oil Company is looking for a Chemical Technician to help manage the chemical program for the Oklahoma Resource Basin asset. The Chemical Technician will be responsible for understanding and maintaining field level chemical application and trouble shooting and report to the Production Chemist. This position will collaborate with multiple departments in the organization to ensure program effectiveness, consistency, and to develop best practices. This position will also function as the bridge in the relationship between Marathon's chemical vendor(s) and Marathon's personnel, ensuring clear and consistent communications and expectations between all parties. The position will be based in Watonga, OK but will require regular trips to the Oklahoma City Office and our many locations associated with those offices.

The successful candidate will possess excellent safety leadership skills and preferably experience with a company with a strong HSE culture. The successful candidate will have a detailed working knowledge of chemical injection systems and basic understanding of types of chemistries that are used in the oilfield. They will need an understanding of production equipment, both downhole and facility and will need a practical understanding of application points. Familiarity with basic I&E principles as they relate to chemical application.


  • Manage chemical injection, sampling, technical support, and troubleshooting

  • Oversee the field performance of chemical contractors to ensure safety and quality of work done

  • Work with chemical vendors to ensure proper chemical program monitoring

  • Drive the reliability and optimization of chemical injection

  • Work closely with the HSE Department to perform H2S testing on Marathon locations and work on H2S hazard elimination

  • Work with the Production Chemist on chemical vendor performance evaluations

  • Oversee and execute routine and special chemical treatments to ensure proper treatment placement

  • Experience troubleshooting and problem solving chemical application issues and the ability to innovate

  • Participate in investigations when necessary when related to chemical program

  • Ability to be effective working within a variety of multi-disciplined teams

  • Perform read and understand a basic water and deposit analysis

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • A minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in a Production Chemistry environment along with general exploration and production operations knowledge.

  • Strong proficiency and working knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Familiarity with the following software programs is preferred, though training will be provided as necessary: Spotfire, SAP, ARC-GIS, and SCADA

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to effectively organize, plan, prioritize, document and complete work independently

  • Safe work practice and active participation in the safety program

SCOPE AND MAGNITUDE: Test, calibrate, operate, maintain, and inspect electronic flow meters and all associated measurement equipment, control valves, and relief valves on designated pipeline system or truck terminal. POSITION FUNCTIONS: * Maintain accurate measurement of gas/liquids into and out of an assigned area of the pipeline district * Monitor, document, and address any lost and unaccounted for gas volumes * Maintain turbine, Coriolis, ultrasonic, and orifice meters, and densitometers * Install, maintain and troubleshoot field communications backbone and end devices including spread spectrum, air link, licensed, and Internet Protocol equipment * Collect monthly and quarterly gas samples * Complete all applicable and required documentation for all aspects of gas measurement, reporting, and position * Responsible for proper operation and maintenance of pipeline facilities in accordance with Company procedures/policies and DOT regulations * Assist in cost control of pipeline operations and maintenance * Install, configure, troubleshoot, maintain, and calibrate electronic flow computers, gas chromatographs, moisture and H2 analyzers, control valve, and actuated valves in designated pipeline system along with other associated measurement and control equipment * Schedule and witness calibration of assigned 3rd party meter stations * Resolve issues pertaining to measurement and system balance * Communicate at a technical level and interface with customers, measurement, operations, and engineering groups. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: * Must be able to work with and interact with others in field operations group as well as Gas Control, Safety, Environmental, Measurement, and Engineering * Will work with and interact with Area Foreman, Plant Managers, and Operations personnel * Interact, communicate, and work with producers, customers, vendors, contractors, service companies, regulatory agencies, and the public KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: * High School Diploma or GED Required * 3+ years of comprehensive gas measurement experience and/or 5 years process automation/I&E and/or data communications/electronics experience * Knowledge of concepts in natural gas gathering, pipeline operations, gas processing, and compressor station facilities * Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Components (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) * Basic knowledge level of computer networking and Internet Protocol * Must have people skills and task prioritizing skills * Valid Driver's License * Must speak fluent English * Must pass pre-employment background check and drug screen.
