Huntsman is seeking a Chemical Technician supporting the Polyurethanes Division located in Auburn Hills, Michigan. This position will report to the Sr Technical Service NAFTA Manager.

Job Scope

The main duties of a chemical technician include performing laboratory development projects, providing technical service support to customers, and conducting field trials of new products.

In terms of laboratory programs, incumbents begin to work more independently, with less direction from more senior technologists or the Technical Supervisor. In addition to executing assigned projects, incumbents are expected to initiate projects independently as a result of their laboratory, technical service, and field trial work. At this level, work programs are generally of a more routine and short-range nature, although some more complex and non-routine projects may be assigned as a development exercise. Work is generally focused on one application area, but additional assignments in other applications may also be given as a development exercise.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety is demonstrated through daily safe operation of laboratory and machine hall equipment, wearing the required PPE for the job, adherence to all site SHE policies, and coaching all team members on a daily basis. Active and enthusiastic participation in site safety programs and other safety initiatives is expected.

Security involves following all site SHE policies, protection of our intellectual property, and properly maintaining confidential information received from customers and other outside parties.

Incumbents may be asked to train other employees in laboratory practices and should proactively share experiences from previous jobs/roles that help to improve lab efficiency, safety, and overall operations. In some cases, for development purposes, Technical Specialists may be responsible for the skill development and overall performance of assigned laboratory technicians.

The major activities associated with this job are as follow:

  • Maintain a safe work environment, complying with safety policies and procedures. Follow safe work practices for personal, equipment, and team member safety -- in both the laboratory and in the field. End results are a minimum of safety incidents and a clean, orderly working environment.

  • Prepare Project Description Forms in order to establish a sound basis for developing new products, applications and/or to provide technical service to customers. End results are the design of efficient and effective projects, involving moderately complex experimental approaches.

  • Conduct laboratory investigations in order to develop new products, application technologies and/or to provide technical service support. The end result is a body of work, which demonstrates the ability to effectively resolve a variety of moderately complex technical service or product development challenges. Work must include well written concise RDC reports, which are completed on time and exhibit rigorous data analysis skills.

  • Provide Technical Service Support to customers. End results are strong relationships with key customer contacts, prompt resolution of problems related to the use of our technology, and differentiation of Huntsman Polyurethanes as a supplier to the Appliance or Construction industries.

  • Participate in Field Trials. End results are effective demonstrations of our technology, which increase the value of our business.

  • Supervise the activities of assigned Laboratory Technicians. End results are effective coaching and counseling, accurate evaluation of the subordinate capabilities, and visible skill development of the assigned staff.

Required Qualifications:

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.

The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.

  • B.S. degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Material Science, and a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience in chemistry, engineering, mechanical, or a similar appropriate industrial environment.

Skills:

  • The ability to execute laboratory development and testing programs.

  • A solid working knowledge of isocyanate and related chemistry

  • A strong working knowledge of the effects of rigid foam formulation variables

  • A basic understanding of the factors influencing the processing and physical properties of Polyurethane materials.

  • Experimental design and statistical data analysis acumen.

  • The ability to create and "sell" technical programs.

  • Safe operation of most laboratory, machine hall, and field trial equipment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Independence and Initiative competencies

  • The ability to lift and transport materials weighing ~45 lb. over short distances is a requirement.

  • Must be willing to work extended hours upon request and remain competent and alert during such times (generally associated with business travel and field trials).

  • The incumbent must be able to remain effective in a dynamic, high energy, team-oriented environment; he/she must have the ability to handle unexpected events or setbacks, changes in work assignments, pressing deadlines, and other stressful events in a professional manner.

Travel:

  • Significant travel may be required at this level (up to 40%) to perform technical service support as well as field trials.
