The Role:

The Gigafactory Engineering team is looking for a talented and innovative chemical engineer who will help us develop the most advanced, large scale, industrial chemical systems. In this role you will be asked to simulate and analyze chemical systems critical to the operation and growth of the Gigafactory and make design recommendations for optimal performance.


  • Physics based modeling and analysis of the Gigafactory chemical systems to optimize their design and operation:

  • Develop equipment models and integrate into a factory system model to forecast needs, inform infrastructure planning, and identify opportunities.

  • Evaluate technology options and make design and safety recommendations to the factory engineering team to improve the performance, sustainability, and cost of chemical systems.

  • Chemical systems include solvent recovery and refining, volatile organics abatement, pure and waste water treatment, chemical storage and delivery, and air separation.

  • Interface with product design and manufacturing engineers to analyze the requirements of manufacturing processes, and identify opportunities for improved factory integration.

  • Work with onsite laboratory and analytical chemists to interpret data generated from analyses of samples drawn from operating systems.

  • Analyze factory data to validate design assumptions, improve real world performance of operating systems, and continue to identify additional optimization opportunities.

  • Assist with system troubleshooting and field investigations as needed to support onsite teams in order to ensure all chemical systems operate as designed.


  • BS in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Master's or PhD preferred.

  • 3+ yrs of relevant experience.

  • High energy individual, questions industry standards and state of the art, drives towards optimal designs from 1st principles.

  • Strong technical problem solver and system level thinker capable of identifying highest impact projects and making complex trade-offs.

  • Strong engineering fundamentals relevant to the Gigafactory chemical systems:, chemical engineering, process modeling, process scaling-up, gas & liquid phase separation, electrochemistry, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics ...

  • Strong process engineering skills are required (FMEA, SPC, PAT, HAZOP/LOPA); good techno-economic analysis (TEA) skill is desirable.

  • Analytical and quantitative mindset.

  • Good at building relationships and working effectively with multiple and diverse teams. Eager to discuss engineering challenges and develop effective solutions to improve the design and operation of the Gigafactory.

  • Strong scientific programming skills (Matlab / Simulink, Python, EES or equivalent). Experience with Aspen Plus, LabView, HSC is desirable.

  • Exposure to battery design and manufacturing, industrial chemical systems (distillation, dry and wet scrubbers, pure and waste water treatment, chemical storage and delivery system, gas and liquid phase adsorption), and high throughput manufacturing is desirable.

  • Familiarity with analytical data analysis (e.g. NIR, SEM, EDS, DSC, TGA, GC, TPR, UV-Vis, FTIR, XRD, XRF, XPS, MS, ICP) is desirable.

Job PurposeThe Human Factors Engineer is responsible for integrating human factors engineering concepts in the development, implementation, management, and maintenance of EHS program elements in support of the company's ISO-45001 Safety Management System (SMS) and ISO-14001 Environmental Management System (EMS). The Human Factors Engineer provides subject matter expertise in applying human factors engineering principles and standards to production systems design, operation, and maintenance to reduce the probability and severity of mishaps due to human error. Primary Role and ResponsibilitiesDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Provide human factors subject matter expertise for the development, implementation, management, and maintenance of program elements for the company's safety management system (SMS) based on integration and adaptation of recognized and generally accepted industry practices in accordance with ISO-45001 as far as practicable to company operations. * Provide human factors subject matter expertise for the development, implementation, management, and maintenance of program elements for the company's environmental management system (EMS) based on integration and adaptation of recognized and generally accepted industry practices in accordance with ISO-14001 as far as practicable to company operations. * Apply knowledge of human cognition and psychophysical capabilities and limitations to optimize human performance in systems operation. * Perform integrated and comprehensive human factors analyses including human-machine interfacing (HMI), hierarchical task analysis, manpower analysis and determination, personnel and workforce management, training requirements and efficacy, training and job aid development, system safety, life safety, and human error proofing to optimize systems usability, cost, quality, performance, and safety. * Promote a culture of quality, safety, compliance and continuous improvement throughout the PENA organization. * Assist with the design, implementation and maintenance of plans, policies, procedures and training programs that ensure compliance with regulations and standards promulgated by NVOSHA, EPA, NDEP, and other authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) over PENA operations. * Maintain professional awareness of human factors standards, procedures, and research. * Maintain professional awareness of all regulatory and standards changes with respect EHS requirements, as well as recognized and generally accepted good industry practices. * Develop and implement training programs, policies, workplace instructions, and guidance documents to reduce human error in operations and maintenance. * Conduct EHS audits, inspections, and assurance programs. * Serve on company and Gigafactory safety councils. * Conduct root cause analyses (RCA), devise practical solutions, recommend containment and corrective actions, and develop and implement time-bound action plans to resolve internal and external EHS non-conformance issues related to human factors. * Collect data and conduct analyses for continuous improvement in reduction of mishaps due to human error causal factors. * Serve as a subject matter expert to senior management, departmental managers and supervisors, other company employees, suppliers, contractors, and customers to provide guidance, direction, and advice on assigned human factors issues and EHS program elements. * Interact and support a broad spectrum of personnel internal and external to the company. Work effectively and efficiently in both team-based and independent working environments to reduce costs and add value to the organization. * Perform any other tasks that may be assigned by the Senior EHS Manager. MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE * Human factors-related hazards are identified and mitigated to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable. * The safety metrics meet or exceed established KPIs. * Containment and corrective actions concerning EHS program non-conformances related to human factors are implemented or escalated in a timely manner. * The number of nonconformance findings attributable to human factors from internal and external audits of the Safety Management System (SMS) are reduced to an acceptable level. * Satisfactorily performs any other tasks assigned by the Senior EHS Manager. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Work is performed individually and subject to periodic review and consultation by the Sen to ensure the quality and quantity of work performed meet expectations. Reports directly to the Senior EHS Manager on ongoing activities and will consult with the EHS Supervisor on major problem areas or deviations from EHS program element objectives or metrics. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Supervises EHS team personnel in the design, implementation, and management of programmatic elements as assigned by the Senior EHS Manager. Basic Qualifications * Bachelor's degree in Human Factors, Systems Safety, Psychology, Industrial or other branch of Engineering, or related science or technical field from an accredited four-year college or university, or 10 or more years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience; * Two (2) or more years experience human factors engineering or human error prevention in a manufacturing or technological environment; * Working knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations, policies, or procedures; * Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications software. Preferred Qualifications * Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Human Factors Engineering, Industrial Psychology, Systems Safety, Industrial or other branch of engineering, , or related science or technical field from an accredited university graduate program; or * Five (5) or more years experience in human factors engineering or human error prevention in aerospace or process manufacturing or nuclear power generation; or * Certified Human Factors Professional (CHFP) credential from the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE).
