Work at Portland's Premiere Theaters! Portland'5 is seeking enthusiastic applicants who enjoy working in and contributing to friendly and fast-paced environment. Multiple positions are available that work varied event driven shifts. The schedules are based on the frequency of events and the needs of the facilities giving you a wide flexibility in your work schedule. Shifts typically average 4 hours and occur in the evenings and on the weekends.

Under the direction of the House Manager or Event Manager, the Checkroom Attendant greets and directs patrons, checks coats and other personal items; distributes assistive listening devices, booster seats, and earplugs to patrons, and acts as on-site receptionist during events. Shifts are located at the Portland'5 Centers for the Arts (Portland'5) and the Oregon Convention Center. Additional shifts may be available at the Expo Center. At Portland'5, the Checkroom Attendant checks in and helps distribute small equipment for volunteers and paid staff.

As a Checkroom Attendant you will:

  • Greet and direct patrons to appropriate locations within the facility, such as exhibit, conference or seating areas, elevators, restrooms, box office and concessions.

  • Inform patrons of applicable rules and policies regarding the specific event, including running times, late seating or entry policies, equipment or personal belongings allowed in the event.

  • Check coats, hats, umbrellas, cameras, and other personal items, etc. Returns items to patrons upon request/proof of item tags. May collect patron collateral for certain Checkroom services.

  • Maintain organization of checkroom, including taking inventory of checkroom supplies. Act as lost and found and lost child contact area.

  • Count and/or stuff programs prior to opening of house, as needed, in Antoinette Hatfield Hall and other Portland'5 theaters. Distribute assistive listening devices to patrons including instructions on proper use of devices; collects collateral. Clean and test devices.

  • Act as on-site receptionist for event by answering telephone and responding to questions regarding event.

  • Check in volunteers and other part-time admissions staff (ushers, gate attendants, elevator operators), maintain a record of staff and volunteer attendance.

  • As directed by House Manager, is responsible for incoming and outgoing emergency calls (911); notes such calls for inclusion with event evaluation.

  • During shifts, maintain radio communication with the house or event manager, reports problems (i.e., incidents, emergencies, patron in wrong seat, facility maintenance issues etc.) as reported by other staff and volunteers on duty, or by patrons.

  • Provide information on personal availability to the Event Services Department to aid in preparation of monthly personnel schedule.

  • May be required to perform or assist with CPR and/or automated external defibrillator actions.

  • In the event of an emergency, dial 911 and collect sign-in sheets, first aid kit, and radio. Report to designated evacuation spot and perform a roll call to account for staff.

  • Perform the physical aspects of the position, including the ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to tolerate inclement weather conditions; ability to climb ramps and stairs; and the ability to lift, hold and carry 10 pounds.

  • Available to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and occasionally early mornings.

  • Read and comprehend all information listed on tickets, vouchers, badges, and other event credentials.

  • Communicate clearly, concisely and in a courteous manner both orally and in written form.

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and positive attitude for venues and for events to contribute to clients' and visitors' positive experience.

  • Remain attentive to, and approachable by, members of the public and clients.

  • Work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.

  • Deal effectively and successfully with stressful and sometimes difficult situations.

  • Represent the venue in a professional, competent, and courteous manner.

  • Grasp procedural techniques and facility policies and regulations, as well as the facility's physical layout.

  • Use computerized systems online via the Internet for event information and scheduling.

  • Must be dependable.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent; AND

  • One year experience dealing directly with the public in a high-volume situation; OR

  • We will consider any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including weekdays, weeknights, and weekends, including evenings and holidays.

Like to have qualifications:

You do not need to have the following preferred qualifications/transferable skills to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider some or all of the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. Your transferable skills are any skills you have gained through education, work experience, including the military, or life experience that are relevant for this position.

  • One year or more of front-facing customer service experience

  • Six months or more experience working with the performing arts

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION

Based on the Oregon Pay Equity Act requirements, Metro's internal equity review process, and the candidates' qualifications, the appointment will be made at $18.68 per hour.

This position is eligible for overtime and is represented by IATSE Local B-20 union. It is classified as a Checkroom Attendant. Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and do not include the specific duties and responsibilities of the positions.
