Compass High School is a one school, one district, public alternative high school whose mission is to create educational equity and reclaim students "joy of learning". Our campus is located on the east side of beautiful Tucson, Arizona. Our curriculum includes a project-based, hands-on approach with an emphasis on the arts and vocational/career educational paths. CHS has a reputation for accelerating the achievement of students entering high school below grade level, are in a special needs program, and students eligible for free and reduced lunch. BUT, even with these challenges, our students soar; they are passionate and aspirational young people who become chefs and welders, scientists, builders, artisans and musicians, entrepreneurs, and much more!

Primary Responsibilities & Qualifications

Visionary Educational Leadership

  • Provide Instructional Leadership
  • Support the culture of the school, lead staff to convey the highest of expectations for students, and hold the school accountable for student achievement. Use data to improve teaching and learning, coach teachers and administrators, support and monitor implementation of state standard aligned curriculum and assessments, and focus the school community on effective teaching and learning.
  • Ensure Professional Support for all Staff
  • Provide differentiated professional development, coaching structures, and a professional environment that supports staff in all roles and at all levels of experience.
  • Lead the Creation of Equitable Classrooms
  • Take the lead in examining grading, assessment, instruction, and classroom management practices that disrupt patterns of inequity and that create inclusive environments.
  • Ensure College and Career Readiness For All
  • Support a strong culture and high expectations for all students for post-secondary success. Oversee data-based academic, career/college counseling, and intervention programs.
  • Accelerate Academic Outcomes
  • Develop the capacity of teachers to use a variety of instructional strategies, including technology resources, to build missing foundational skills and accelerate the movement to proficiency and beyond. Ensure effective implementation of instructional strategies that accelerate the achievement of underperforming students, English Learners, and special education students. Understand the need and use of data to support decision making for all students regardless of their achievement level.
  • Develop Career Pathways
  • Oversee the development of career pathways grounded in community leadership that focus on technology, design, and educational careers.
  • Innovate Models of Teaching and Learning
  • Work closely with the wider network in developing powerful ways to reimagine education to empower students and build passion, purpose, and belonging.
  • Provide Team Leadership - facilitation, supervision, and coaching that models and enhances emotional intelligence and responsiveness alongside functional excellence

Operations and General Administration

  • General Administration, Management and Leadership
  • Oversee the daily running of the school: addressing discipline/behavior issues with the Director of Student Affairs, supporting intervention, overseeing student support programs, scheduling, managing budgets, coordinating with the principal and management team on strategic initiatives.
  • Effective Implementation
  • Ensure the structures and communication are in place to move ideas to implementation in an effective, timely way
  • Compliance Management
  • Ensure timely completion of compliance and accountability processes mandated by the Arizona State and the Federal government.
  • Talent Management
  • Help to sustain and manage a collaborative, high-achieving team of returning and new teachers, administrators and staff. Ensure a team of highly qualified educators are well supported.
  • Community Relations
  • Build relationships with families, local institutions, businesses, and other schools.
  • Enrollment and Recruitment
  • Oversee and participate in outreach, enrollment activities and partnerships.
  • Facilities
  • Work with the School Manager and Chief Business Officer to ensure a facility that meets the needs of the school and community.
  • Drive
  • Strong sense of urgency in addressing the needs of our students and a relentless drive to attain positive results.
  • Problem Solver
  • Effective solver and project manager with strong attention to effective implementation

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will also have:

  • Masters in Educational Leadership or currently enrolled in a master's program.

  • Administration experience for three or more years.

  • Experience as an educator for three or more years.
