Job Description Summary

This role will expand the BorgWarner Morse Systems' eProduct development talent and capabilities in support of the EV DC Fast Charger product line for North America. Product development could include internal development initiatives and collaboration initiative with external partners and government bodies such as the US Department of Energy. The Product Engineer will report to eProducts engineering manager.

The Power Electronics, Product Engineer drives hardware architecture and topology definition for high power, high frequency circuits from ideation, to prototype proof of concept delivery, to production. Collaboration with software engineers and PCB layout engineers required to deliver a high-quality solution within an accelerated timeline. Responsibilities also include design, documentation, and design validation aligned with a rigorous engineering development process.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Drive hardware architecture and topology definition

  • Design high power, high frequency circuits (50-350+ kW/1.5 kV)

  • Responsible for all aspects of product design, including modeling, key component selection, schematic capture, PCB support, code development, magnetics design, thermal design, regulatory and compliance considerations, DFM

  • Collaborate with software engineers to define and implement firmware, drivers, and algorithms

  • Guide the activities of the PCB layout engineer

  • Follow a rigorous BorgWarner engineering development V cycle process

  • Develop documentation in accordance with internal and external standards for certification and homologation requirements

  • Support robust DFMEA, and DVP&R development

  • Be a product lead in the lab during prototype builds, test, troubleshoot, or teardown throughout the product development and validation

Based in Auburn Hills, MI with travel to sister sites and to customer sites in Europe or Asia. Required to be primarily on location with the ability to work from home on a part time basis.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent

  • 5-10 years of experience in Automotive Industry, ideally automotive/industrial DC fast chargers with focus on High Voltage and High Power systems

  • Automotive product development/release experience

  • Understanding and application of the product lifecycle

  • Microsoft Office core competencies in Word, Excel, and Power Point

  • Solid written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications - Core Competency

  • Master's degree

  • Understanding of high voltage high power topologies and components

  • Knowledge of power MOSFET, IGBT, SiC

  • Experience in designing 3 phase AC/DC PFC and multi KW DC/DC resonant converters

  • Deep understanding of control theory applied to power electronics.

  • Strong electrical/electronic design skills and understanding of system level engineering tradeoffs

  • Experience with thermal management of electronics and electronic components

  • Experience with batteries and charging systems

  • Thorough understanding of relevant industrial and automotive standards for industrial and consumer products, including EMC

  • Knowledge of EV charging standards a plus

  • Analytical problem solving, critical thinking, and hands-on approach

  • Knowledge and experience with Automotive SPICE (ASPICE) development process for electronics and software a plus

  • Knowledge and experience with Functional Safety according to ISO26262 a plus

  • High Voltage Safety Experience / Training

  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills

  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels in an organization

  • Ability to work and keep constant communication with globally located engineering team
