That's why, at Ascension, we invest in our nurses, so they can have a positive impact on the people and communities we serve. 5 East, Oncology is a 22-bed unit that specializes in the care of patients with a diagnosis or history of cancer. 5E also sees a variety of medical-surgical patients ranging from pneumonia and COPD to CHF and diabetes.
Common surgical procedures for 5 East include biopsies, EGDs, lithotripsy, and cholecystectomies. On 5E, you will sharpen your skills in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation so that you can respond to a change in a patient's status quickly and confidently. You will have many opportunities for lab value analysis, patient/family education, wound care, IVs, and medication administration and management.
As part of the care for oncology patients, you are given the opportunity for chemotherapy certification and trained on the care of patients receiving radiation. Our nurses are the only chemotherapy certified nurses at St. Vincent's East.
Our average nurse to patient ratio is 1:5-6. Our beds are normally full, in high demand, and our staff is rarely canceled. Most of the staff on 5E work a schedule of every 4th weekend, and their rotation includes 5-7 days off every 4 weeks.

What You Will Do Coordinate unit staffing and provide leadership while ensuring implementation of clinical objectives and quality patient care in assigned area. Assign, direct, educate and monitor nursing and support staff during assigned shift. Contribute to or perform performance evaluations of staff.
Assess daily patient care needs and develop and distribute patient care assignments, ensuring that population appropriate patient care is given. Evaluate the effectiveness of patient care and identify any issues that affect desired patient outcomes. Responds to complaints about patient care and manage through established channels.
May provide input for hiring, training, directing, development and evaluating of staff. What You Will Need Licensure / Certification / Registration: BLS Provider credentialed from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date.
Licensed Associate Professional Registered Nurse credentialed from the Alabama Board of Nursing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date. Education: Diploma from an accredited school/college of nursing required. Work Experience: 1 year of experience required.
