Position: Charge Nurse FLSA: Exempt Location: Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Center 5905 N. Classen Court, Oklahoma City, OK 73118 Hours: The normal working hours for this position are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. May occasionally require additional or flexible hours to complete assigned responsibilities. This position is required to be available and responsive twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week to meet public safety and operational needs. GENERAL PURPOSE: Provides professional nursing services and coordinates the health care services program provided for the Oklahoma County Juvenile Detention Centers (OCJDC) residents and staff. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direction of the Facility Physician and the general supervision of the Chief of Detention Services. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Provides directions to all OCJDC staff involved in providing medical services to residents. Provides direct supervision to licensed medical personnel. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises licensed medical personnel, plans and evaluates the medical program, and organizes the medical clinic area in a manner that ensures necessary equipment, supplies, and medication are available. Responds to residents emergency and non-emergency medical needs in a timely manner. Coordinates appointments with outside medical providers as needed. Distributes resident medication as prescribed. Develops a system to obtain and maintain individual health and medical records for residents including information from parent and/or guardian and health care personnel outside the OCJDC. Assigns and maintains medical information in a format which provides useful statistical information concerning health care services and prepares quarterly and annual reports on the health care system that is approved by the Chief of Detention Services. Ensures personnel are available on-duty to staff the medical clinic and schedules on-call staff to provide twenty-four (24) hour medical care to OCJDC in case of emergencies. Maintains medical reports, records and files as required for licensing and ACA documentation. Assist in the development and implementation of medical policies and procedures, which pertain to the activities for which the nurse is responsible. Provides training for OCJDC staff on medication, suicide risk, and current medical issues that may arise. Also provides training to staff to assist disabled residents who cannot otherwise perform basic life functions. Provides guidance to OCJDC administration regarding the health and wellness of residents and staff as needed. Administers physical exams, hepatitis B vaccines and TB tests for staff. Provides relevant health information to residents on an ongoing basis. All other duties as assigned. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: Licensed Registered Nurse with three (3) years of relevant experience. Bachelors Degree preferred. Experience working with youth is preferred. Special Requirements: Must have a telephone number where the employee can be reached. Must ensure a copy of current Oklahoma LPN license is on file at all times. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have a good understanding of the health care needs of adolescents. Must have a good understanding of the various components involved in a total health care system. Must be able to relate to youth in a professional, positive, and helpful manner. Must have good organizational skills. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and other agencies. Must be able to communicate effectively. Must be able to handle stressful situations. Must possess the ability to work independently. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Computer, telephone, medical supplies and equipment, photocopier, and fax machine. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to push/pull with at least twenty (20) pounds of force to operate the secure doors within the facility. Must be able to occasionally lift/carry up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Must be able to kneel/bend/crouch as necessary for filing/administrative purposes. Must have the ability to read, write, and comprehend to accomplish various administrative reports, filing, and number recognition related tasks. Must have the ability to listen and communicate in such a way that effective communication with coworkers can be accomplished. Must have clarity of vision and object manipulation to operate various computer/technological equipment including telephone, keyboard, mouse, computer, calculator, copy machine, etc. This position is primarily sedentary, approximately 70% sitting and 30% walking/standing. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment will range from combative and hostile to calm and peaceful.
