Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

To provide spiritual care, support, and counseling to patients, families, team members, and physicians in an ecumenical and interfaith environment, while undertaking a program of pastoral education in healthcare ministry consistent with the Standards of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Non-professional ministry experience required.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Typing/word processing skills.Long hours demanding physical and emotional stamina in potentially high stress areas of the hospital. Physical capability for covering wide hospital geography quickly in emergency situations. Considerable on-call time with irregular hours creating physical and emotional demands.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide routine and crisis spiritual care, consultation, short-term counseling, and pre-surgery visits to patients, families, physicians and/or team members as assigned and in accordance with department policies.

  • Is on-call and accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as assigned.

  • Provide consultation to members of the health care team to aid in assessing the role of a patients faith perspective in their healing. Participate, as assigned, in patient care planning, interdisciplinary team activities and development; staff- and patient-directed support groups, and orientation of new team members.

  • Assist families with their needs in relation to the patients illness so they are enabled to provide supportive care to the patient. Assist family members in understanding procedures surrounding a death and in contacting families or other significant persons. Serve as non-medical message bearer between family and patient or family and medical staff during critical care/crises treatment.

  • Facilitate sacramental ministries such as holy communion, baptism, confession and absolution, sacrament of the sick and such other rites.

  • Provide spiritual consultation, crisis intervention, stress management consultation and support to hospital personnel experiencing the death of a patient and/or critical incidents in relation to patients, family, or staff.

  • Provide leadership for regular worship services and other special services as assigned.

  • Participate, as assigned, in spirituality and support groups for patients and families and/or the interdisciplinary team.

  • Administer advance directives throughout the medical center.

  • Write, submit and present process reflections, verbatims, theological reflections and other presentations as assigned.

  • Facilitate and encourage discussion and decision making related to medical-ethical dilemmas such as termination of treatment, living will and durable power of attorney, organ donation, do not resuscitate (DNR) orders, as indicated. Ensure that religion/faith issues are addressed.

  • Represent the values of the religious communities to health care professionals and hospital associates.

  • Identify and clarify ethical dilemmas through attendance and participation at grand rounds, case conferences, team meetings, conferences, etc. in the primary specialty area to which assigned.

  • Provide consultation to members of the health care team to aid in assessing the role of a patients faith perspective and faith community related to ethical issues.

  • Support the hospital ministry of religious leaders with referrals, information, education, counseling and consultation. Serve as resource to religious leaders, faith communities, and other community groups to enhance hospital community liaisons. Represent the values of the religious communities to health care professionals and employees of the medical center.
