Challenge Course Facilitator

The George Mason University, Mason Recreation, Center for Outdoor Experiential Learning (The EDGE), located at the Freedom Center on the Science and Technology Campus, is seeking applicants for the position of Challenge Course Facilitator.

The EDGE is an incredible opportunity to work with others in an exciting and stimulating environment. Applicants will join an expert team of facilitators on The EDGE challenge course, challenging themselves and the groups they work with. We are open year-round, and our busiest season runs from March to late November. This position starts with training May 2125 and 2931 and extends into summer and fall, with opportunities to work on an on-call basis in the winter and return the following spring.

Responsibilities:

  • Team Education: Effectively develop rapport and communicate with groups to inspire learning.

  • Safety Instruction: Properly set up and explain challenges in a way that fosters cooperation, positive reflection, and growth.

  • Group and Risk Management: Provide for physical and emotional well-being of participants, be aware of risks associated with challenge courses, fit and check equipment to guarantee proper use, be ready to respond in an emergency situation, and be aware of and adjust to group or individual needs.

  • Course Setup, Maintenance, and Inspection.

  • Inspect and set up high and low elements for daily use and occasionally assist with maintaining elements, equipment, and trails.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to attend all training sessions;

  • Ability to work a minimum of two days per week (Sunday-Saturday) between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.; and

  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications or ability to be certified within 30 days of start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience facilitating experiential education programs, including ropes or challenge courses, team-building, ground initiatives, and games.

  • Adults pursuing a college degree, or graduates in education-related fields, including outdoor education, recreation, education, psychology, or social welfare.

Additional Information:

Mason students are highly encouraged to apply. Excellent communication skills are necessary. Additional necessary skills include proven group management skills, sound judgment, desire to work outdoors in all weather, interest in working with children and adults, a knack for connecting with youth and adults in a beneficial way, and the ability to have fun while representing Mason in a professional manner.

Mason Recreation oversees three facilities on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University including the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC), the Aquatic Fitness Center (AFC), and Skyline fitness center. These facilities boast four gymnasiums, racquetball/ squash courts, several locker rooms, fitness galleries and dedicated rooms for yoga, cycling, group exercise, and marital arts/ self-defense classes. We house and maintain a recreation and competition pool, sauna, whirlpool, and several exterior facilities including a pavilion, turf and grass fields, jogging/ walking trails, and a team challenge course on our Science and Technology Campus. We provide the following programs and services for the campus community: Fitness, Aquatics, Outdoor Adventures, Intramural Sports, Club Sports, the EDGE (team building programming), as well as a Summer Youth Camp. This position reports directly to the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports. Responsibilities: Club Sports: * Knowledgeable of all aspects of Club Sports with specific emphasis on student development, facilities, programs, and services; * Direct and facilitate student leadership through the Executive Council Club Sports (ECCS) and president's council; * Serve as a liaison for club sport organizations; * Coordinate on and off campus facility reservations; * Maintain an updated club sport practice and competition schedule; * Assist in the development, allocation, and management of club sports budget; * Process club sport purchases and reimbursements; * Assist clubs with self-generated revenue through dues, donations, and fundraising; * Compile weekly post competition reports for upper administration and social media; * Coordinate and make arrangements for club sport travel; * Facilitate a tiered club sports model with shared governance; * Maintain an updated inventory of club sports equipment, supplies, and apparel; * Supervise club sport practices and competitions; * Monthly and annual budget reconciliations; * Assist in the return-to-play process for student athletes returning from injury; * Oversee hiring, evaluations, and training for all volunteer and paid club sport coaches; * Assist in the assessment of club sports; * Oversight and management of all related contracts; * Coordinate and provide approval of community service outreach; * Revise and maintain updated club sport policies, procedures, and participant manual; * Assist with Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid training for club safety officers and competitive sports staff; * Ensure incident/accident reports have been completed and entered into Connect2; * Ensure all club safety officers and competitive sport supervisors have up-to-date certifications; * Provide risk management and emergency action plan (EAP) training for club safety officers, competitive sports supervisors, and camp staff. Professional Development * Continue to develop professionally through membership and participation in applicable professional organizations and developmental workshops; * Provide students and staff with opportunities for professional development through various organizations, workshops, clinics, and extramural activities; * Coordinate with various on-campus departments to provide leadership workshops for students and staff; * Serve on Campus Committees pertinent to Competitive Sports, camps, and special events. Required Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience; * Experience in a university/college recreational sports setting; * Extensive knowledge related of recreational programming and related rules and policies; * Ability to relate well to diverse individuals and demonstrate the ability to manage a large staff; * Ability to train, supervise, and motivate student leaders for the competitive sports and camp programs; * Ability to provide leadership and guidance to a diverse club sports program; * Ability to manage budgets; * Ability to foster a positive work environment and encourage collaboration and teamwork; * Commitment to making an active and meaningful contribution to the university's well-being initiative; * Capable of lifting moderate loads and performing equipment set-ups for various recreational activities.
