DescriptionThe University of Virginia (UVA), one of the nation’s leading public institutions, seeks an experienced, mission-driven leader to be the inaugural Chair for the Department of Nursing Research within the highly ranked UVA School of Nursing (SON), an academic entity that exists both as part of the university's academic core as well as part of UVA Health. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research (ADR), the Chair will serve as a thought partner for and extension of the ADR in a range of activities.
The Chair’s primary focus is the development of faculty to ensure the fulfilment of the SON’s mission and vision. As a leader who contributes to a healthy work environment, the Chair for Research establishes a sense of trust and team spirit among faculty and staff to create a shared vision to meet the research, educational, and service missions of the SON. The Chair for Research collaborates with the senior leadership team to create strategies and systems to expand future capacity, with a focus on the research mission.
This is a 12-month faculty position with administrative responsibilities. The Chair for Research will join the School of Nursing as they embark on an ambitious journey to an extraordinary future, guided by a recently developed 10-year strategic plan. The school's plan is aligned both with the University of Virginia's Great and Good Plan as well as UVA Health's One Future Together Plan.
Key to this extraordinary future is positioning the School as a leader in nursing science. This new position will play a critical role in achieving goals to strengthen our nursing research infrastructure and to build and sustain a diverse community of scholars committed to research and scholarly excellence. KEY PRIORITIES Working closely with the Associate Dean for Research and the SON community, the following will be key priorities for the Chair: Serve in advisory capacity
Advise ADR as appropriate regarding performance and opportunity gaps related to faculty resources required to fulfill the research mission.Identify and participate in the recruitment of potential candidates for faculty and postdoctoral positions.Advise Associate Deans and Chairs of Undergraduate and Graduate programs on faculty needs (e.g., research support requests, teaching supports).Support the ADR and PhD program lead, as appropriate, to ensure ongoing program and liaison improvements with the Health System as well as Schools across the UniversityDirect, Coordinate, and Manage Faculty Resources Facilitate professional growth of faculty through mentorship and annual goal setting to fulfill the tripartite mission. Develop mentoring supports for faculty to promote scholarly dissemination.Assign individual faculty teaching responsibilities in collaboration with Chairs of the Undergraduate and Graduate programs. Advance the research strategic plan
Participate in the implementation, oversight, and evaluation of the strategic plan.Communicate with SON leadership and community about emerging opportunities with potential partners and identify benchmarks for SON research partnership involvement.Promote the School’s interests at the University as well as community, regional, and national functions; represent the ADR as needed at these functions.Qualifiations The successful candidate will ideally possess the following professional skills, experience, and personal characteristics: Experience mentoring and evaluating faculty, as well as coordinating teaching assignments Experience with strategic planning; ability to work collaboratively to achieve shared goals
Ability to attract, recruit, develop, motivate, and retain high-performing faculty and staff
Excellent communicator, superb listener, with ability to build relationships, community, and influence Ability to work highly effectively at all levels and with diverse stakeholders, internally and externally
Demonstrated commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture
Preference for an individual who holds a current license or a multistate licensure privilege to practice nursing in Virginia as a registered nurse without any disciplinary action that currently restricts practice The following is required: PhD in nursing or related field
Established externally-funded research program as PI and strong track record in mentoring early career and peer faculty in scientific development and productivity
