Job Summary

The School of Arts and Sciences seeks dynamic candidate for the position of Chair within the Department of Mathematics and Data Science. This is an academic year 10-month contract with additional administrative duties during the summer. The contract is expected to begin August 1, 2024.

Responsibilities

Chair Responsiblities -

In addition to performing the duties assigned to full-time faculty members at the College of Coastal Georgia, a Department Chair is expected to carry out the administrative duties of an academic unit. The Department Chair will be responsible for the efficient operation of the Department, supervision of faculty, will act as the departmental representative in interactions with the College and community.

The Department Chair should have a standard load of 12 credits per academic year and will work with the School Dean to plan their schedule effectively. Administrative duties of the position include the following:

  • Leading the preparation of course schedules and related pay memos within the department;

  • Coordinating and assisting with assessment, including unit, program, and course assessment as it relates to accreditation and program reviews;

  • Conducting annual performance evaluations of all faculty and provide recommendations for tenure, promotion, improvement, and termination;

  • Coordinating hiring of qualified and diverse faculty and promote achievements of faculty within the department, School, and College;

  • Facilitating the service agenda of departmental faculty, including academic advising, throughout the year;

Con't Responsibilities -

  • Mentoring and encouraging departmental faculty with regard to leadership, scholarly activities, and the development of quality curriculum and instruction;

  • Collaborating with faculty on departmental decisions and communicating clearly and effectively;

  • Advocating and responding to faculty and student concerns through investigation, conflict resolution, and collaboration with the Dean and other offices, as needed;

  • Developing partnerships (at various levels) to the benefit of the Department and department faculty.

  • Acting as the main department representative to administration, other offices on campus, current/prospective students, and the community.

  • Performing department/school- specific duties as defined by the requirements of the relevant academic discipline(s).

  • Performing other essential, but non-regular, duties as requested by the School Dean, PVPAA and/or President.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

  • Current faculty rank of Assistant Professor or higher.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and human communication skills

  • Evidence of leadership qualities and/or leadership experience.

  • Must possess a current valid driver¿s license with acceptable driving record and pass a yearly Motor Vehicle Report review.

Required Experience

  • At least 5 years teaching experience in mathematics, data science, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Tenured with rank of Associate Professor or higher

Preferred Experience

  • Terminal degree in mathematics, data science, or a related field.
