SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Site Physician(s) and Practice Manager, serves as a primary assistant to physicians and nurses. May also be directed by employees in a charge or lead role. Practices high quality medical care in performing a variety of patient care activities such as preparation for appointments, minor exams and procedures, laboratory and maintenance controls, patient documentation, and various office duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Depending on Practice Site Requirements, an incumbent in this position may not perform all the key responsibilities listed below. However, it is expected that at least 80% of the responsibilities are performed for this job. Travel to other sites may be required.

Patient and Appointment Preparation:

Prepares examination rooms for patient visits, including cleaning, sterilizing, stocking supplies. Escorts patients to exam rooms and assists in obtaining pertinent information, which may include obtaining vital signs, weight, height, health history, chief complaint and symptoms. Maintains optimum patient flow by keeping exam rooms occupied with patients for office visits.

Performs Exams/Procedures:

Upon request, assists the Provider (Physician, PA, NP) with examinations and minor office surgeries. May assist with instrument handling and exam/procedure preparation.

May collect lab specimens (blood draws, urine, and saliva) and perform on-site lab testing including collecting samples for slides centrifuge and/or cultures. Performs various tests: EKG; blood glucose testing; hemocults; urine pregnancy tests; pulmonary function testing; spirometry; and vision testing.

Changes dressings, applies bandages, casts, and performs other first aid procedures. Carries out CPR in patient emergent situations.

Additional Responsibility for CMAs:

Practicing within the scope of certification, training, and experience, performs intramuscular, subcutaneous and nebulizer medications as ordered by a physician.

Quality Control Procedures:

Conducts appropriate laboratory and sterilization controls and maintains appropriate documentation. Performs autoclaving duties upon completion of sterilization certification education.

Disposes of biohazardous wastes according to OSHA standards. Cleans, disinfects and/or sterilizes instruments and equipment following safety and OSHA standards. Performs routine maintenance on medical equipment. Maintains departmental logs assuring adherence to DMG Safety/OSHA and blood borne pathogen policies and procedures.

Patient Documentation:

Utilizes appropriate Hyperspace computer functions and interaction with clinic staff and physicians to facilitate patient flow. Documents patient information into their chart, including current medications, reasons for the visit, and patient vitals.

Assures that lab, x-ray, and other test results are placed correctly in the patient chart. Prepares charts as per department guidelines. Completes all necessary ancillary service requisition slips.

Familiarizes self with necessary department paperwork and is able to identify and complete it. Based on need and direction, provides patients with written department visit policies, HIPAA Rights, medical literature, etc

Assists in Coverage:

While performing patient care duties, the CMA will not exercise independent medical decision making or perform evaluation/assessment activities.

Assists nurse with pharmacy callbacks after demonstrating an understanding of medications. Performs patient callbacks as explicitly instructed by Provider or Nurse.

Returns pharmacy faxes to pharmacies after physician approves refills. Provides office coverage during vacations, absences, and/or breaks and lunches.

Office Duties:

Calls for hazardous waste pick-ups as necessary. Answers telephones and takes appropriate messages. Orders supplies to replenish materials used by staff.

Other Duties as Assigned: (Depending on Office Specific Requirements)

Receptionist:

Front desk reception. May perform patient registration and scheduling.

Confirm appointments and insurance coverage. Processes mail.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must be experienced in PC/keyboard skills and Microsoft office applications.

  • Must possess excellent communication and writing skills.

  • Must have the ability to plan, organize, and work independently; exhibits problem-solving skills.

  • Able to develop professional rapport with employees at all levels of the company.

  • Must be able to perform CPR when necessary.

  • Practices OSHA safety standards and complies with HIPAA at all times.

  • Must complete skills verification testing for tasks required for this position.

  • Ability to pass CMA competency training during a 90-day new hire orientation period and on an annual basis.

EDUCATION and / or CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

  • High School diploma or GED and a graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.

  • Active Medical Assistant certification through one of the following required:

  • American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)

  • American Medical Technologists (AMT)

  • American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)

  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA)

  • CPR certification required.

  • Phlebotomy certification required upon hire or within 90 days of hire date based on clinic need.

Performs office duties as directed including answering phones, taking messages, opening mail, assisting in retrieval of medical charts, chart preparation, charge entry, etc. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Acknowledges and welcomes patients and visitors. * Informs staff of patient/visitor arrival and provides instruction, assistance and information as to completion of requires paperwork and waiting times. * Answers general questions about the facility: location, rest rooms, elevators, hours of operation, etc. * Ensures waiting area is clean, tidy, and has appropriate patient announcements and brochures. * As directed, conveys information to patients and/or visitors. * Assistants or calls for assistance with patients with ambulatory difficulties. * Obtains registration information from patient for input into EPIC. * Verifies and/or updates demographic and health plan information. * Checks patients in and out of clinic. * Provides patients with information regarding payment obligations, HIPAA Notice of Privacy practices, clinic policies, and collects all required forms and signatures. * Schedules appointments into EPIC according to Practice protocol. * Conveys schedule changes to appropriate staff. * Reviews next day's schedules and as directed, prints out physician schedules in advance of visits. * May assist patients with obtaining appointments at other physician and hospital sites and/or schedules lab or radiology testing. * Pulls patient charts, files information correctly info patient charts, and maintains filing system. * Prepares charts to clinic and/or Practice specifications. * Collects copays, cash, check, or credit card payments ensuring patients receive receipts.
