Summary

The MOR Surgical Technologist 4/ First Assistant is a certified technologist and allied health care professional providing an advanced level of surgical care to patients within the operating room under the supervision of perioperative nurses and surgeons. This job works in the main operating room. The Surgical Technologist utilizes AORN's Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices and AST Standards of Practice as a reference to ensure quality, safety and appropriateness of patient care.

Under the reporting relationship to the Surgical Services Clinical Manager, the MOR Surgical Technologist 4/ First Assistant is a certified technologist and allied health care professional provides an advanced level of surgical care to patients within the operating room under the supervision of perioperative nurses and surgeons. This job works in the main operating room. The Surgical Technologist utilizes AORN's Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices and AST Standards of Practice as a reference to ensure quality, safety and appropriateness of patient care.

Education

Graduate from an accredited Certificate or Associate Degree program in Surgical Technology.

Graduate from a Certified Surgical Technologist First Assist Program.

Certification, Registration & Licensure

Certification Required: Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification, or equivalent course credentialed by American Heart Association. National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certification and completion of the Medical Technician Registration is required.

Experience

A minimum of 2 years of experience as a surgical technologist 3/or 2 years' experience as a CSTFA at another place of employment and a minimum of 6 months employment at Concord Hospital/Concord Hospital Laconia.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the integrity of the sterile field by utilizing knowledge of aseptic technique.

  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of normal and pathological surgical anatomy and physiology.

  • Ability to provide intraoperative skills including but not limited to: trocar insertion (i.e. ASA trocar guidelines), injection of local anesthetics (i.e. ASA Local Anesthesia Guidelines), hemostasis efforts, and placement of wound drains, tissue handling and closure of body planes.

  • Clamping, cauterizing, suturing, inserting, injecting, manipulating, retracting, cutting and ligating tissue/vessels as necessary.

  • Should be capable of working independently, or co-dependently with the surgeon, to finalize the surgery, according to surgeon preference.

  • Uses advanced knowledge of instruments, equipment, and supplies necessary for surgical procedures.

  • Prioritizes team and department needs through analysis of the daily schedule and case mix.

  • Assists with maintaining a clean, safe surgical environment.

  • Ensures adherence to Surgical Services Infection Prevention, Safety and Risk Management Policies, Procedures and Guidelines.

  • Performs job specific requirements and other duties as assigned.

  • Manages a Surgical Technologist 4 track and requirements that supports the unit's and organizational initiatives.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to blood borne pathogens, and bodily fluids. The employee is frequently exposed to airborne contaminants, moving mechanical parts, non-weather related heat or cold, radiation, electrical hazards - shock and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to airborne pathogens, chemotherapeutic agents, slippery surfaces, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
