JOB SUMMARY

Under direction prepares for and participates in the intraoperative care of surgical patients in accordance with hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and standards of care.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education Required: Formal training program after high school Preferred: Associate degree (2yr program) or equivalent
Major None Specified Experience Required:
One to two years' experience

Skills Required: Previous Operating Room Experience

National Certification Required- Certified Surgical Technologist

ACCOUNTABILITIES ESSENTIAL

Demonstrates the ability to establish effective working relationships while communicating effectively and understandably with patients, customers, physicians, and other hospital personnel. Helps select and assemble instruments, supplies, and equipment for procedures; maintains aseptic technique; performs counts according to policy; follows Standard Transmission-based precautions while wearing the required apparel; demonstrates team approach; assists in maintenance of equipment and supplies and protects them properly when sending to Sterile Prep; provides instruments, suture, and supplies to the surgeon in an appropriate and timely manner; demonstrates knowledge of the procedure in order to anticipate the surgeon`s needs; prepares sterile field and arranges instruments in a timely manner; performs patient care tasks that may be delegated by nursing personnel in a safe and timely manner; assists in putting away equipment and preparing for the following procedures; cleans and stocks OR suites at the end of the shift. Follows standard departmental and hospital policies and procedures for surgical intervention while complying with the preferences of the surgeon. Keeps an ongoing assessment of supplies needed and informs the Team Leader of changes to be made to the surgeons` preference cards. Assists in preceptorship, training, and evaluating of new personnel. Demonstrates ability to perform essential work duties as identified and the correct use of supplies, equipment, tools and chemicals after brief training. Exhibits proper body mechanics when performing tasks and demonstrates the ability to work with, clean up spills and or dispose of body fluids, blood, secretions, as defined in organizational policies and procedures. Utilizes standard precautions when performing tasks. Demonstrates education, training, or an equivalent combination of both, consistent with standards for operating room nursing education and practice as defined by the AORN. Assists RN in documentation of implants, serial numbers, etc. Functions in high intensity environment with the ability to adapt to changes in work environment while exhibiting the ability to organize, prioritize and or complete workload within designated time. Demonstrates computer skills as appropriate.
