The Surgical Technologists work under the direct supervision of physicians/nurses to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical Technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Fulfills departmental responsibilities that foster the goals of the hospital's mission, values and vision.

  • Works as a professional member of the team utilizing the team concepts with a positive attitude and without gossip about or to fellow team members.

  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among healthcare teams by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.

  • Handles the instrument, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.

  • Has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.

  • Has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile filed.

  • Duties include, but not limited to, are as follow:

  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure;

  • Scrubs, gowns, and gloves;

  • Sets up sterile able with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed for procedure;

  • Performs appropriate counts with circulator in accordance with hospital Count Policy;

  • Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants;

  • Helps in draping sterile field;

  • Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure;

  • Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure;

  • Prepare sterile dressings;

  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization;

  • Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room;

  • Assists in prepping room for the next patient.

  • High School Diploma/GED

  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technology school or equivalent experience or training

  • BLS Certification required.

  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist required

Operational Duties: * Demonstrates necessary practical, technical, or specialized skills required for the role of the surgical technician in accordance with AST (Association of Surgical Technologist). * Demonstrates basic knowledge and understanding of surgical procedures to enable proper performance of scrub duties and to anticipate the needs of the surgeon. * Assists in preparing the operative suite for surgery by checking and gathering supplies, equipment, and instruments. * Assists with patient positioning, skin preparation, and surgical draping according to surgeon's protocol. * Assists with application of dressing splints and casts. * Ensures that surgical asepsis is maintained in the handling of instruments, sponges, sutures, drains, needles, and dressings. * Assists in the turnover of the O.R. suites between cases, disposing of trash and linens, and cleaning of equipment and environmental surfaces, as required. * Prepares procedure room for use the following day by bringing in equipment, setting up, "pulling cases" accurately, and reporting to supervisor items that are needed and not available. EDUCATION: * Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program (preferred). EXPERIENCE: * One year experience in an operating room setting (preferably in an ambulatory surgery center). CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: * Surgical Technologist certification required * Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program as required per facility practice and state regulatory requirement; otherwise preferred. * Valid BCLS Certification upon employment*online certification not acceptable.
