Trinity Health Of New England is looking for a Certified Surgical Technologist to join our team of mission-driven healthcare innovators. This position is responsible for supporting both Spine and Cranial cases for SFHMC the Comprehensive Spine Institute Operating Rooms. A dedicated team of CST's and RN's cover 24/7-365 days/year coverage of a busy Level 1 head and spine trauma center. Works with the team to scrub case and coordinate equipment, instrument and implant needs. Our program utilizes the BrainLab technology with the first intraoperative CT imaging scan in the State of CT. Works collaboratively with the OR team, Anesthesiology, Radiology and various patient care areas to obtain maximum efficiency of daily schedule and optimal patient outcomes under direction of the Director, the Comprehensive Spine Institute

You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Exceptional Patient Care: Must understand we exist for the patients and their care is the number one priority.

  • Excellent Communicator: Communicate effectively (written and verbal) with admin, colleagues, patients and family member.

  • Strong Educator: Educate patients and family members so that they have a transparent understanding of the care being provided.

  • Technical Familiarity: Understanding in computer-based applications, email, and standard applications such as Microsoft Office.

  • Active Teamwork: Demonstrates problem solving, conflict resolution, and positive communication through teamwork.


  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology.

  • Licensure: Certified CST.

  • Certification: BLS required from either the Red Cross or American Heart Association and current Surgical Technologist certification.

  • Must provide evidence up to one week before start date.

  • Prefer 1 year of specialized spine and neuro training in a level 1 or 2 hospital. Willing to train the right individual.

The incumbent performs routine and delegated duties according to Connecticut Children's standards, policies and procedures. This includes scrubbing and other related duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse to maintain sterility during surgical procedures. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES CLINICAL PRACTICE * Identifies core cases for assigned services. For these cases the Surgical Technologist is able to: Perform first scrub role, directly assisting the surgeon by passing sterile instruments and supplies at the sterile field. Predict and anticipate surgeon's requests based on knowledge of the case. * Distinguishes between core and specialty cases in each service. * Recognizes the duties associated with the second scrub role, including but not limited to: holding retractors, sponging or suctioning operative site, applying electrocautery within the surgical technologist's scope of practice, as directed by the surgeon. * Collaborates with circulating RN to correctly account for countable items at the sterile field according to policy and procedure. * Assists RN in gathering appropriate supplies for cases. * Responsible for mixing, labeling and administering all drugs and solutions dispensed to the sterile field. Assures and maintains supply of fluids, solutions and drugs. * Identifies specific care needs as related to the patient's age group. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES * Assists with preparation, maintenance and after-care of supplies, equipment, and facilities with the OR. * Places equipment and supplies in the operating room and arranges instruments, according to instructions * Demonstrates the ability to wash and sterilize equipment when necessary following manufacture's recommended instructions. * Assists team members to place and position patients on the Operating Room table * Scrubs arms and hands appropriately and dons gown and gloves. Aids OR team members to don gown and gloves * Applies dressings post surgery * Must be able to take call independently within 12 months of hire Commits to lifelong learning and professional development by obtaining 15 continuing education equivalents per year Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and coworkers.
