This position is accountable for the care and the safety of patients in the OR. The incumbent performs routine and delegated duties according to Connecticut Children's standards, policies and procedures. This includes scrubbing and other related duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse to maintain sterility during surgical procedures.

CLINICAL PRACTICE

  • Performs first scrub role, directly assisting the surgeon by passing sterile instruments and supplies at the sterile field.

  • Predict and anticipate surgeon's requests based on the type of case being performed.

  • Recognizes and supports duties associated with the second scrub role, including but not limited to: holding retractors, sponging or suctioning operative site, applying electrocautery within the surgical technologist's scope of practice, as directed by the surgeon.

  • Collaborates with the circulating RN to correctly account for countable items at the sterile field according to policy and procedure.

  • Assists RN in gathering appropriate supplies for cases.

  • Responsible for mixing, labeling and administering all drugs and solutions dispensed to the sterile field. Assures and maintains supply of fluids, solutions and drugs.

  • Identifies specific care needs as related to the patient's age and size.

  • Demonstrates didactic and clinical skill required to perform core and specialty procedures performed at the ASC.

  • Demonstrates the ability to anticipate the expected progression of events during a case and distinguishes between expected and unexpected case progression.

  • Exemplifies the ability to rapidly and appropriately respond to changing clinical situations.

  • Possesses knowledge of multiple types of pertinent equipment including but not limited to specific pieces of specialty equipment as well as multiple instrument trays.

  • Promotes the development of collaborative relationships with OR personnel by articulating practice issues and communicating in a constructive manner.

  • Develops and presents product and equipment reviews for OR staff.

  • Analyzes current preference card data and collaborates with other team members, providing input into surgeon's preference card content.

  • Collaborates with nurse manager to determine capital budget needs.

  • Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory levels of specialty supplies and implants.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists team members to place and position patients on the Operating Room table.

  • Scrubs arms and hands appropriately and dons' gown and gloves. Aids OR team members to don gown and gloves.

  • Applies dressings post-surgery.

  • Assists with preparation, maintenance and after-care of supplies, equipment, and facilities with the OR.

  • Places equipment and supplies in the operating room and arranges instruments, according to instructions.

  • Demonstrates the ability to wash and sterilize equipment when necessary following manufacture's recommended instructions.

  • Cleans all anesthesia equipment including specialized airway equipment at conclusion of case, check equipment for proper functioning.

  • Maintains appropriate inventories of unit supplies in patient rooms/bedside stands, and in treatment, utility, medication and linen rooms.

  • Assist with routine clerical tasks.

  • Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with CCMC standards.

  • Commits to lifelong learning and professional development by obtaining 20 continuing education equivalents per year.

  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families and coworkers.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Education Required: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program

LICENSE and/or CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

  • Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistants.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR in adult, child & infant is required upon hire and maintained thereafter.
