POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for providing assistance to surgeons, registered nurses and other specialists in caring for patients with minor to major illnesses or injuries. The Surgical Technologist functions under the direction of the licensed registered nurse. Will also be required to function and cross train to the Endoscopy department with all the skill requirements. Accepts shift work and takes call as required by the department. Works with patients ranging in life span from infant to geriatric.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in delivery of age appropriate patient care in the operating room and other procedural areas.

  • Assembles and prepares sterile setup of supplies and instruments used for surgical procedures.

  • Anticipates surgeon's needs during surgery based on knowledge of surgical procedures.

  • Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistant.

  • Ability to perform scrub role in two or more OR specialty services as assigned.

  • Assists with room turnover to ensure timely, efficient use of OR time.

  • Assists to help prepare for the next day's surgical cases by pulling case carts and updating preference cards.

  • Responsible for restocking unused sterile supplies and equipment, recognizing appropriate integrity of sterile packaging and handling.

  • Acts a resource for surgeons, pct's, attendants and other departments.

  • Assists in maintaining a clean, orderly and safe environment.

  • Handles sponges and sharps appropriately to protect the patient and entire surgical team as well as providing accurate count and reconciliation of sponges and sharps.

  • Responsible for strict maintenance of surgical sterile field.

  • Participates in unit activities

  • Participates in budget and inventory control.

  • Keeps supervisor and or supply clerk informed of needed items.

  • Participate in staff and self development and is responsible for maintenance of certification requirements.

  • Takes appropriate safety precautions to prevent/manage accidents in the area.

  • Requirement to perform duties related to disinfection and sterilization of instruments.

  • Participates in performance/process improvement.

  • Assists with orientation of new employees.

  • Completes annual competency requirements.

  • Attends 80% of staff meetings.

  • Attends 90% of Mandatory Education meetings and in-services.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Required: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program or Hospital conducted on the job training with proof of program content and completion prior to 2010 fulfilling the grandfather clause of state requirements. A minimum of three (3) years recent experience as a Surgical Technologist with demonstrated competency in multiple inpatient surgical specialties; experience waived if certified.

Preferred: Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist program.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

Required: Current certification as BCLS Healthcare Provider.

Preferred: Surgical Tech Certification. ACLS.

POSITION SUMMARY: This position, under the supervision of the Registered Nurses, Manager, and/or Unit Director, ensures the efficient operation of the OR in the Labor and Delivery area. Scrubs as a member of the surgical team under the direction of a registered nurse, providing assistance for scheduled as well as emergent cases. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Unit Operations: Actively supports the operations of the nursing unit. * Prepares delivery tables using sterile technique as required. * Adheres to policy and procedure for cleaning, and decontamination of all instruments and equipment. * Maintains competency in scrub technique by scrubbing in for cesarean section. * Assists with specimen collection as delegated by RN and ensures timely transport of specimens to the lab. * Observes universal precautions and aseptic technique. * Initiates emergency procedures when necessary. Fiscal Accountability: Demonstrates awareness of and commitment to the business and fiscal aspects of St. David's Georgetown Hospital and the St. David's Partnership. * Maintains par levels of supplies as required. * In collaboration with the Director, tracks requisitions and purchase orders. * Works with other team members to inventory and order supplies through Medibuy. * Collaborates with the patient care team to assure that chargeable items are accounted for in a timely fashion. * Prepares and opens instruments and supplies according to physician preference, maintaining sterile technique. * Demonstrates ability to select, utilize and manage equipment in the OR in a cost effective manner. Patient Care: Responds to the developmental needs of the patient and family by demonstrating basic knowledge of patient growth and development and by providing individualized patient/family care which addresses language, culture and learning needs. * Assists staff as needed with patient care, i.e. answering call lights, assist MD with procedures, assists with labor and deliveries, assists with transferring patients, restocking of delivery carts and infant warmers with supplies and non-narcotic medications, witnessing wastes and returns of narcotic medications. * Keeps RN aware of significant information regarding patient and family. * Collaborates with the RN regarding unusual situations and seeks assistance as needed. * Adheres to all hospital policies and procedures. Customer Relations: Consistently facilitates positive communication with patients, families, physicians and other guests of St. David's Georgetown Hospital. * Answers the telephone courteously within three rings. * Routes telephone calls to appropriate individual. * Takes messages accurately and alerts appropriate individual. * Promptly greets individuals entering the unit and offers assistance. * Provides accurate information to all customers. * Understands ones own role and how it relates to others.
