Job Summary / Purpose

Assists physicians, nurses and other hospital personnel incaring for diagnosing, and treating patients with cardiopulmonary deficienciesand abnormalities by applying therapeutic, preventive, and diagnosticprocedures.

Essential Key Job Responsibilities

  • Administerstreatments and medications which promote pulmonary hygiene, improve pulmonaryfunction, and improve respiratory status.

  • Evaluatesand ensures proper maintenance of airways and patient ventilation.

  • Implementsoxygen, gas, and humidity therapy. Maintains oxygen and humidity devices andemergency equipment.

  • Performsoximetry, safely obtains blood samples, and performs blood gas analysis;verifies accuracy of results.

  • Performspreoperative assessments of patients' respiratory status; provides instructionon prevention of postoperative complications.

  • Setsup, monitors, and maintains invasive and noninvasive ventilatory andoxygenation devices; recognizes and corrects malfunctions or inappropriatesettings.

  • Participatesin resuscitation efforts and other emergency medical treatments (based uponlevel of training).

  • Demonstratescompetent and safe procedures in obtaining and handling sputum specimens.

  • Stockssupplies, assembles crash boxes, prepares ventilators and other equipment forimmediate use; maintains a neat and orderly work area.

Other duties as assignedby management.

Certifications

Activelicense to practice Respiratory Care through the Board of Respiratory Care(KBRC) required; CRT credentialed from the National Board of RespiratoryCare, BLS, per Process Levelrequirements on ACLS, PALS, etc.

The incumbent conductshimself/herself in a professional manner and is courteous to patients,physicians, visitors, members of the department and all other healthcarepersonnel. The incumbent supports and contributes to departmental productivityand organizational objectives by functioning as an integrated member of therespiratory care team and performs services consistent with his/her scope oflicensure. The incumbent supports and exhibits behaviors consistent with theorganization's mission and values in offering hope and healing to all. Essential Key Job Responsibilities * Plans and administers non-medicated aerosoland humidity therapy. * Plans and administers oxygen therapy(including implementation of oxygen therapy protocol where appropriate. * Plans and administers aerosolized medicationand specialty gas therapy. * Plans and administers COPD care program. * Performs airway management. * Plans and administers incentive spirometry. * Cleans and reprocesses respiratory therapyequipment and stocks supplies for immediate use. * Plans and administers bronchial hygiene andperforms chest physiotherapy (including implementation of bronchial hygieneprotocol where appropriate). * Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation andmanual ventilation during resuscitation attempts and aides in rapid responsecalls when appropriate. * Collects, analyzes and reports arterial bloodsamples. * Operates mechanical ventilators (invasive andnon-invasive) and manages ventilator settings and weaning per protocols andprovider orders. * Performs electrocardiography studies. * Performs bedside pulmonary function testing. * Performs overnight pulse oximetry. * When called upon to do so, serves as apreceptor to newly hired employees and/or respiratory therapy students. * When called upon to do so, serves in thecharge respiratory therapist role. * When called upon to do so, assists in researchprojects (as directed by departmental and facility leadership. * Provides patient, family, hospital staff andphysician education as appropriate. * Attend staff or hospital meetings as requiredand participates on committees as directed. * Performs other duties,within the scope of licensure, as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Required Education for Staff Job Levels At a minimum, the incumbent shall havereceived the equivalent of an Associate's Degree in Cardiopulmonary Servicesor Respiratory Care from an accredited respiratory therapy educationalprogram. Required Licensure andCertifications Theincumbent shall be distinguished as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC); such distinction shall bekept current (if applicable). Additionally, the incumbent shall hold anactive license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner from the Kentucky Board ofRespiratory Care. Theincumbent shall hold a current certificate from the American HeartAssociation (AHA) in Basic Life Support or Basic Life Support for HealthcareProviders. Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills andAbilities The incumbentshall be skilled in interpersonal communication to the level that isrequired to effectively interact with patients, visitors and members of thehealthcare team. The incumbent shall possess critical thinking skillsadequate to evaluate patient conditions and recommend appropriateintervention (or to seek assistance when necessary). The incumbent shalldisplay time management skills that are sufficient to organize scheduledtasks in a manner that ensures delivery of high quality respiratory care. Ata minimum, the incumbent shall communicate in English at the twelfthgrade level. Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing theEnglish language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job,especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety orsecurity. Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians,family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer servicefocus and application of positive language principles. The incumbent shallpossess basic rationale in communicating therapeutic needs with patients, visitorsand members of the healthcare team. Ability to work independently; capable ofhandling challenging / difficult procedures and patient care situations;demonstrates sound judgment and executes above average clinical skills.Exhibits strong interpersonal and team player skills with all levels of thehealthcare team and assures delivery of excellent customer service to allpatients, visitors, physicians and co-workers. PREFERRED Qualifications One year experience as a RespiratoryCare Practitioner. It is desired that the incumbent hold a currentcertificate from the AHA in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. If the incumbentfunctions within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, he/she shall hold acurrent certificate from the AHA/American Academy of Pediatrics as aNeonatal Resuscitation Program Provider.
