POSITION SUMMARY: Assumes service-oriented attitude to gain a sense of pride and accomplishment. Accepts the team approach with dedication and commitment towards all work performed. All work is to be of a high quality and performed honestly and timely. Provide basic patient care services for patients under the direction of the Director of Nursing or shift Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Perform delegated independent STNA functions using established procedures, policies, guidelines and standards as observed by the RN or LPN.

  • Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess patient's condition. Collects specimens from patients.

  • Provides supervision to patients at all times.

  • Assists patients with personal hygiene and ADL skills.

  • Contributes to development of patient plan of care based on the identified patient problem/needs.

  • Intervenes to restrain violent, potentially violent or suicidal patients by verbal or physical means as required.

  • Maintain and coordinate communication among staff, patient and physician as evidenced within medical record, client and healthcare team feedback.

  • Effectively communicates patients changing needs and plan of care among staff members - focusing on treatment goals.

  • Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary.

  • Manages patient's property in compliance with program policies and procedure.

  • Attends staff meeting and reads patient charts to ensure that the treatment plan is followed.

  • Reports potential crisis situations and medical/physical complaints immediately.

  • Demonstrates competency in therapeutic communication.

  • Consistently utilizes universal precautions and standards of infection control, environmental safety guidelines and level system, if applicable.

  • Ensures adherence to patient rights.

  • Reports all instances of patient abuse, staff misconduct and other unusual incidents to the Supervisor.

  • Completes, reviews and/or signs incident reports, and provides follow-up (as appropriate and in accordance with agency policy).

  • Provides crisis intervention; applies CPI principles and techniques to aggravated client situations taking appropriate precautions for the safety of the patient, self and bystanders..

  • Maintenance & filing of patient records

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCES REQUIRED: Education & Licensure: - High School diploma or equivalent.

  • Competency tested as recognized by the state of employment.

  • First Aid Course.

Experience: - One-year experience as nursing assistant in a psychiatric hospital, geriatric unit or residential treatment

center in a direct care role preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to work with adult and geriatric populations as demonstrated through educational accomplishment or work experience.

  • A working knowledge of JCAHO, CMS, state Department of Mental Health, and patient rights standards, and any other applicable federal and state laws and regulations governing mental health care facilities relating to direct patient care.

  • Successful completion of CPR Certification and Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB).

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Certain positions within this unit may require driving. When driving is an essential function of the position, a current driver's license, appropriate driving record and maintenance of at least minimum level of auto liability insurance required by company policy will be required at the time of hire.

  • Successful completion of CPR certification and Management of Assaultive Behavior.
