Job Summary:

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is accountable to the patient care team for providing direct patient care functions under the supervision of a registered nurse and performing clerical, communication and other related duties to facilitate the efficient functioning of Department services. All duties to be performed in collaboration with team members. Duties and responsibilities are performed according to standards outlined in competency based/evaluation tool. Participates in and accepts responsibility for functions delegated to the team. This position must demonstrate a commitment of quality service to our patients, the public and our co-workers.

Essential Functions &


Provides assistance to patients in their routine activities of daily living, including but not limited to:

Performs range of motion.

Ambulates patient.

Positions and provides skin care.

Changes bed and provides appropriate oral and personal hygiene.

Assists with feeding and meal delivery.

Distributes linen.

Assists with routine hygiene care including toileting and incontinent care.

Provides assistance to patient care team in collection of patient data and specimens:

Obtains urine, stool, and sputum specimens and processes specimens as needed.

Obtains and records heath, weights, vital signs, including pulse oximetry and pain assessment and I&O.

Communicates patient status and reports changes in patient condition to licensed professional.

Provides assistance to patient care team by performing and explaining designated patient care procedures:

Performs incentive spirometry.

Transports patient.

Preps for diagnostic tests.

Assists rehab therapists (PM & R).

Performs pulse oximetry/oxygen set up in oxygen therapy.

Prepares room (supplies).

Provides post mortem care.

Prepares for admission and discharge.

Assists nurse in emergency situations.

Maintains and cleans equipment.

Performs ostomy care.

Performs suction (oral, naso pharynx).

Performs blood sugar finger sticks.

Performs EKGs (department specific responsibility).

Maintains a safe and orderly environment.

Demonstrates effective communication, customer service, and team building skills.

Documents patient care and related duties appropriately.

Able to access and use hospital information system according to related duties (i.e., entering charges for patient related items or procedures.)

Demonstrates ability to perform clerical responsibilities by using the hospital's information systems.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Transcribes physician's orders to appropriate document.

Performs selected patient registration activities.

Enters patient charges into the electronic medical data base systems and follows up as appropriate.

Performs data entry into electronic medical data base systems.

Coordinates scheduling of patient tests, diagnostic procedures, and transports.

Reviews patient chart to ensure all procedural documentation and consent forms are present.

Posts patient diagnostic results in the patient's chart.

Maintains procedure/test documents and files.

Answers telephone promptly using excellent Customer Service skills.

Facilitates communication between diagnostic/testing area, patient care area and families.

Answers patient call light system.

Communicates patient and family requests to appropriate personnel immediately after receipt of request.

Responds and carries out patient and family requests when appropriate.

Functions as a Customer friendly unit receptionist for Associates, Physicians, patients, family and visitors.

Facilitates physician and department consults until task is complete.

Maintains a safe and orderly environment.

Coordinates equipment/supply needs in collaboration with the Supply Agent.

Assists with cleaning and maintaining equipment.

Notifies appropriate department of equipment malfunction.

Performs any other related duties (e.g., clerical, technical duties) as assigned.


High school diploma or GED equivalent

Certified Nursing Assistant, certified by the Virginia Board of Health Professions.

CPR certification required at date of hire

This includes, but is not limited to answering telephones, maintaining records, monitoring flow, and schedules outpatient procedures in the registration system and routes schedules to appropriate modalities. Serves as the contact person with physician's offices and obtains an established list of required data elements from physician's offices when scheduling the procedure. Reviews scheduling orders and processes periodically to assess scheduling quality. Critical to this position is the ability to gather and record all appropriate information that lays the groundwork for the remaining and future fiscal efforts of Mary Washington Healthcare (MWHC). This position must demonstrate a commitment of quality customer service to patients, co-workers, physicians, and the general public. Essential Functions & Responsibilities: Greets all patients, visitors, family members, physicians, and associates in a courteous and professional manner. Addresses customers' needs efficiently, effectively, and confidentially. Answers telephones courteously, professionally, and by the third ring. Screens and transfers telephone calls or takes messages as appropriate to facilitate effective Radiology communications. Delivers messages in a timely manner. Schedules tests as ordered by a physician or his/her staff through appropriate scheduling software. Collects all required data elements from an established scheduling minimum data set from physician offices. Routes scheduling information to appropriate departments as needed. Schedules multiple tests in the proper sequence to ensure efficiency and optimum test results. Provides patients/physicians' offices instructions for proper pre-procedure preparation. Utilizes verbal and written methods to communicate new information and changes to all schedulers. Corrects scheduling errors identified by quality review process. Utilizes available technologies with physician offices to capture key scheduling information. Provides training to scheduling back-up resource as needed. Maintains proficiency in the various systems utilized during the outpatient access process. Monitors appropriate reports in accordance with the outpatient access process and has a good knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 codes so that orders are entered accurately and efficiently. Effectively communicates operational activities and issues with co-workers, Supervisors and Manager. Obtain authorization information from certain insurances via their website. Interfaces courteously and effectively with internal and external customers. Must consistently present a positive departmental and organizational image, as well as commitment to departmental goals, objectives, standards, policies and procedures. Demonstrates proficiency within assigned area of responsibility and a general understanding of the entire patient registration process. Assists with the outpatient verification process to ensure the accuracy of insurance information and that authorization requirements have been met for all scheduled patients prior to receiving services. Obtains benefit coverage from physician offices and patients. Accurately enters information into computer system. Obtains diagnosis information and/or CPT code from the physician/office or the outpatient department, or performs CPT coding, as necessary for completing the insurance authorization process. Monitors scheduling work-lists to ensure timely scheduling and insurance verification. Assures that the patient is given the proper prep, facility location and arrival time for their scheduled exam. Assists in the handling of patient financial matters to include: a. informing self-pay patients of the up-front payment requirements for patients with no insurance b. informing patients of MWHC's policy on Advanced Beneficiary Forms c. providing directions to the various facilities d. informing the patients on the cancellation and no-show policy for the facility e. coordinating the charity process and paperwork f. informing the patients on the policies for co-pay and deductible collections at the time of visit 22. Maintains proficiency in the various systems utilized during the pre-access process. 23. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent GED. Minimum typing speed of 55-60 wpm required. Patient scheduling, registration or call center experience preferred. Experience in data entry, customer service, CPT and ICD-10 Codes and medical terminology preferred. Strong verbal and written communications skills required.
