Position Summary

GW-MFA Business Office is in need of a Certified Medical Coder whose primary function is to review outpatient clinical documentation and diagnostic results as appropriate to extract data and apply appropriate ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 codes for billing, internal and external reporting, research and regulatory compliance activities.

Education

Bachelors Degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience is necessary. Certified Coder (CPC or CCS-P) required. Trained in ICD-10-CM.

Experience

At least 3 years of professional coding along with some administrative experience.

Competencies

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.

Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations. Must have strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels within and outside the MFA. Ability to do math calculations, input data into the computer, and analyze data as requested

Follows policies of CMS, AMA and commercial carriers to assure consistent quality and adherence to coding principles and documentation requirements. Knowledgeable in Medicare, Medicaid, Managed Care and all other participating third-party policies and procedures. Education AA, Health information technology degree and AHIMA or AAPC approved certification required RHIA, RHIT, CCS or CPC with more than 8 years of demonstrate working experience. PREFERRED -BS in Health Information Management and AHIMA or AAPC approved certification required RHIA, RHIT, CCS or CPC Experience Outpatient coding and management experience required. 2 years minimum coding management and 5 years minimum outpatient coding experience. PREFERRED 5 years coding management and 10 years outpatient coding experience. Competencies Possess strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner. Must be able to follow and understand instruction and react favorably in all work situations. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing heavy workload volumes and meet critical deadlines. Knowledge of healthcare industry, physician billing and reimbursement process, IDX system and medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Extensive knowledge of Medicare's regulations regarding teaching physicians and documentation guidelines, and other federal, state and local regulations concerning clinical documentation.
