Department Information

Stamps Health Services is an outpatient ambulatory care center that provides health care and health education to students and their spouses/domestic partners. The center is located in a state-of-the-art, 40,000-square-foot facility within the Joseph Brown Whitehead Building, next to our Campus Recreation Center.

Stamps Health Services provides care in six areas: Primary care, Women's health, Psychiatry, Travel/Immunization/Allergy, Pharmacy, and Diagnostic Services (lab and radiology).

Job Summary

Provide direct supportive patient care to eligible patients under the direction of nurses and providers. The Medical Assistant works closely and collaborates with providers, nurses, and the patient care team to support clinic functions.

Position reports to and is directly supervised by the Nursing Manager or the Manager, Women's Health. Interact with students, nursing staff, physicians, medical records, cashier, laboratory, pharmacy.

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -

Fulfill clinical medical assisting responsibilities, which may include escorting patients to an exam room, checking vital signs; verification of preferred pharmacy in the EMR, verification and documentation of medications, allergies, and past medical history in the EMR, physical examination preparations; drug administration through various routes (oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, nebulized) including injections applying the six rights of medication administration ; prescription verifications with physician's orders; assisting with minor procedures including procedure tray set-up; pre/post-procedure care, applying dressings, and suture removal; specimen collection/handling such as urine, throat, nasal, vaginal, stool, and sputum; blood collection by venipuncture; electrocardiography, spirometry, ear lavage, application of pre-made splints/braces and first aid, medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping and autoclaving; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; instructing patients with assistive devices.

Job Duty 2 -

Fulfill clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include answering phone calls, checking patients in, sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/X-ray reports, other notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying patient demographics; managing and updating the medical record to ensure that information is complete, timely and accurate.

Job Duty 3 -

Fulfill environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms.

Job Duty 4 -

Fulfill organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights and patient privacy; responding appropriately to patient needs; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor, completing both departmental and institutional required trainings.

Job Duty 5 -

Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary. Organize job functions and work area to be able to effectively complete varied assignments within established time frames.

Job Duty 6 -

Foster a positive workplace environment by interacting at all times with co-workers and managers respectfully and in accordance with the USG Code of Conduct, communicating relevant information in a timely manner; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in team problem-solving methods.

Job Duty 7 -

Foster a positive customer service experience for patients and visitors by exhibiting a warm and welcoming demeanor, using words, tone of voice and body language that communicate friendliness, warmth and a willingness to assist, and making every effort to meet the need of patients and visitors within the policies and procedures set forth by unit leadership

Job Duty 8 -

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

High School Diploma, GED Certificate, Vocational School Diploma (Medical Assistant Registration or Certification)

Other Required Qualifications

Certified / Registered Medical Assistant, BCLS

Required Experience

One to three years of job related experience

SKILLS

Computer skills to include Microsoft Office, email, and basic keyboarding; interpersonal skills to work effectively with other individuals (co-workers, supervisor, students, providers, staff and the public) in the performance of job duties; ability to demonstrate consistent cooperativeness, courtesy and tact in the handling of job responsibilities; must be dependable.
