It is the mission of the Department of Pediatrics, East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, to provide exemplary medical education/training of physicians in pediatric medicine at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, it is the mission of the department to provide model comprehensive primary and consultative subspecialty care to children of eastern North Carolina, to advance scientific knowledge through basic and clinical research, and to provide continuing medical education opportunities for physicians in the region.

Job Duties

The Department of Pediatrics is looking for a Certified Medical Assistant to work in the Pulmonology clinical area. This position will serve as an extension of the physicians, but report to the Nursing Administrator for Clinical Operations.

This individual will assist with the outpatient health care management of children. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to handle high volumes of phone calls and be able to communicate effectively with patients. Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and basic computer skills needed for entering data into the electronic medical record.

Accuracy and attention to detail are important. The ideal candidate must be able to communicate with patients and patient families, as well as with other healthcare professionals. Responsibilities of this position include nursing support, technical assistance, telephone triage, assisting physicians with physical exam (scribe), and other duties which may include explaining medical procedures to patients, assisting with medical claim forms, and giving instructions to patients as instructed by physicians.

The position is instrumental in assisting rooming of patients in exam rooms and to help with clinic flow by improving the turnover of exam rooms by helping providers with obtaining the intake of the patient's medical history, allergies, med review, and med reconciliation. The employee will also work-up patient charts prior to the office visit and handle patient refills, faxes, prep instructions for procedures, and assist with telephone triage. Direct patient care duties may include performing routine treatments under the close supervision of a Professional Nurse or Physician.

Employees may also clean and maintain the patient care environment, perform routine clerical functions, and transport and move patients. The employee will have to obtain and record pertinent health information, maintain patient data and reports, and provide information to individuals and families. Currently, hours of clinic operation are from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with a rotating scheduled late day to cover patient care.

CLINICAL SUPPORT POSITION - NOT SUBJECT TO STATE PERSONNEL ACT.

The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is affiliated with ECU Health Medical Center, which serves as its teaching hospital, as well as the flagship hospital for ECU Health.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b. 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS). Minimum Education/Experience

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA.)

License or Certification required by statute or regulation

Depending on candidate qualifications, one of the following will be required:

(1) Contributing: Registered NAI through the NC Department of Health Human Services

(2) Journey: Registered NAII through the NC Board of Nursing

(3) Advanced: Certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) is preferred OR Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through the American Medical Technologists (AMT). If not already certified or registered, please note that certification or registration through the previous mentioned organizations, or a CCMA through the National Healthcareer Association, must be obtained 6 months from your start date for continued employment.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education License or Certification required by the Department
