NYC Health+ Hospitals/Elmhurst is hiring a Certified Hand Therapist to join the growing hand and upper extremity surgery team. Health+ Hospitals/Elmhurst is a well-recognized urban Level I trauma center, rooted in the local community of northwest Queens. We are seeking a Certified Hand therapist that is comfortable working with inpatients and outpatients, with both trauma and non-traumatic conditions as part of our comprehensive hand and upper extremity care. This position implements hand therapy to patients with hand and upper extremity conditions through the use of advanced therapeutic techniques to relieve pain, restore physical functioning, facilitate independence and return to work.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates and assesses the patient's abilities and limitations.

  • Establishes logical plan of treatment and goals based on the referral and evaluation of functional skills, joint mobility, muscle strength, tone, and coordination, sensibility and other measures to ensure rapid patient recovery.

  • Implements therapy according to the established plan, utilizing appropriate procedures, equipment and techniques within the scope of hand therapy.

  • Participates in wound management through wound care, dressing changes, exercise, stretching and splinting.

  • Recommends adaptive equipment, completes the equipment justification forms and arranges for the delivery of equipment.

  • Re-evaluates patients, assesses their progress and makes recommendations regarding discharge.

  • Consults and co-treats with other patient care team members to discuss patient progress, set objectives for patient treatment and integrate hand therapy with other activities.

  • Educates the patient and/or caregiver about the findings of the evaluation, established goals of the therapy program, plan of treatment, home programs, injury prevention and other related information.

  • Evaluates home or work environments and makes physical barrier modification or ergonomic recommendations.

  • May assist with development and training physical and occupational therapy students.

  • May provide in-services for staff, other departments and the community.

  • Provides documentation of patient care according to established criteria.

  • Participates in in-services, medical conferences, staff meetings, continuing education courses, team meetings and other related activities of the hand and upper extremity service.

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school for Occupational or Physical Therapy.

  • Minimum of three years of clinical experience as a practicing Certified Hand Therapist preferred. Extensive splinting skill from elbow to fingertip.

  • Must hold specialty certification in Hand Therapy.

  • NY State professional licensure is required.

  • Advanced MS Office Suite skills required.

  • A passion for Hand Therapy, hand anatomy and patient care.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks and demands.

  • Strong customer orientation skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skill required.
