Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Must be a State of Florida Certified Correctional Officer or must possess a Certificate of Completion from a Correctional Officer Basic Recruit program issued by an accredited school of criminal justice in Florida, or must be currently enrolled in a Florida Correctional Officer Basic Recruit Program and pass the State Correctional Officer Certification Examination prior to being hired. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Recruitment Notes

  • Applicants will be subject to an extensive screening process to include a background investigation, fingerprint check, polygraph, psychological evaluation and medical examination.

  • Additional pay supplements and incentives are available based on assignments and experience. Certified Correctional Officers will earn $175 hazardous duty pay biweekly.

  • The Personnel Management Bureau (PMB) will notify applicants via e-mail regarding their intake appointment. Applicants must ensure that the e-mail address provided in their online employment application is accurate. All subsequent correspondence from the PMB will be sent via e-mail only.

  • Applicants must bring one original and one copy of the following documents to their intake appointment:

  • Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Certification or Basic Recruit Certificate with passing state examination status. Acceptable proof of certification: Basic Recruit Certificate -

Certificate of Compliance for Correctional Officers issued by the Florida Department of Law

Enforcement; or Certificate of Completion issued by an accredited criminal justice institute that indicates satisfactory completion of the Basic Corrections Training and the results of the State Officer Certification Examination for Criminal Justice Officers.

  • (For applicants currently enrolled in a Florida Correctional Officer Basic Recruitment Program) official transcript, current class schedule, or official letter from the Registrar, as proof of enrollment.

  • Most recent DD214 - Member 4 form (if applicable) - Eligible Veterans will be given preference.

  • Birth Certificate, U.S. Passport, or Naturalization Certificate (United States citizenship is required for employment.)

  • Court disposition(s) for all arrests, including juvenile and traffic arrests, and copies of arrest affidavits

  • Social Security Card (with current legal name and signature)

  • Name change document(s); e.g., marriage certificate, divorce decree, court document for name change, etc.

  • Documents for each year of self-employment; e.g., corporate papers, business license, etc.

  • High School Diploma/GED/Official Transcript, or an official transcript from an accredited college/university verifying completion of one of the following: 1) at least 30 semester hours; 2) at least 45 quarter hours; 3) an Associate Degree or higher. Official transcripts must be in a sealed envelope. Transcripts from outside of the United States or its territories must be validated by Miami Dade College or another authorized institution and translated if necessary.

  • Employment Leave and Attendance History for the past two years.

Applicants who do not provide a valid e-mail address, who do not comply with any document requests, or fail to appear on time for any scheduled appointments will be deemed to have voluntarily withdrawn from the process and will need to reapply for further consideration. There will be no rescheduling throughout the hiring process, unless a valid and verifiable reason is provided and accepted by the Personnel Management Bureau (PMB) Commander.
