Child Life Specialist in Family Support Services at Providence Alaska Medical Center

Responsible for the coordination, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive therapeutic and educational programs with the emphasis on the Pediatric patients' and families' positive adjustment to hospitalization. Provides interventions to circumvent the negative psychological impact of hospitalization and illness. Includes working with all pediatric age patients to facilitate their socialization and positive adjustment to the hospital environment by promoting age appropriate activities to assure continued growth and development; by preparing them for the necessary medical interventions through play and/or discussion; by encouraging the use of coping skills during stressful medical encounters and by fostering the patient's self expression, autonomy, sense of mastery and positive self esteem.

Required qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Child Development/Child Life or related field
Certified by the Child Life Commission

Preferred qualifications:

Master's Degree
Two (2) years experience as a Child Life Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Health Department (AHD) HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; between the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. LOCATION: 825 L Street Example of Duties Position is responsible for the enforcement of codes, regulations and statutes for child care facilities through inspections, investigations, enforcement, technical assistance, training, agency coordination, development of standards, and for license or permit issuance recommendation. Perform other related duties as assigned. The Anchorage Health Department (AHD) engages in the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) emergency responses and the federal Incident Command System (ICS). This includes training exercises as part of the AHD's Crisis Health Action Team (CHAT) and municipal Emergency Operations Center (EOC). In the case of a natural or manmade disaster, AHD's employees may be called to engage in emergency operations responses and recovery. Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and six (6) college credits in early childhood development, child development, child psychology, or geriatric care and five (5) years of experience in child care licensing, administration of a child care program, quasi-institutional facilities or closely related field. OR Associate's degree in Social Work, Child Development, Early Childhood, Elementary Education, Gerontology, Elder Care Management or related discipline which includes six (6) college credits in early childhood development, child development, child psychology, or geriatric care and three (3) years of experience in child care licensing, administration of a child care program, quasi-institutional facilities or related field. OR Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Child Development, Early Childhood, Elementary Education, Gerontology, Elder Care Management or related discipline which includes six (6) college credits in early childhood development, child development, child psychology, or geriatric care and one (1) year of experience in child care licensing, administration of a child care program, quasi-institutional facilities or related field. Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver's license by the time hire. A current satisfactory TB screening test by the time of hire. A MOA Peace Officer Certification must be obtained within one (1) year of hire. Preferences: * Experience working in a child care setting. * Fluent in a second language is highly preferred for the position, but is not an essential job function.
