Purpose of the Position: Under general direction, perform health related services for preschool through twelfth grade students including Special Education students. Strengthen and facilitate the educational process by assisting in the removal and modification of health related barriers to academic success.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Facilitate and provide state-mandated vision, color vision, and hearing screenings for students in targeted grades, Special Education students, and new students. Coordinate follow-up healthcare with community providers.

  • Complete Health and Development (H&D) evaluations for current and new students referred for Special Education services including mandated screenings for three-year reviews.

  • Serve as a member of the Student Study/Student Success, Individual Education Plan, and 504 Teams to provide assessment and recommendations involving health related issues.

  • Develop Individualized Health Support Plans (IHSP), Emergency Care Plans and provide case management for students with specialized health care needs.

Minimum Skills or Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of education, health education, community health, sociology or other related areas. Knowledge of health services and specialized health care procedures.

  • Knowledge of the social, emotional, and physical needs of infants through adult age children. Knowledge of federal, state and local health regulations concerning students.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs to develop and produce correspondence, reports, publications, presentations, and projects.

  • Ability to understand and implement complex oral and written directions given in English.

  • Ability to compose clear, complete, and concise correspondence and reports independently using correct grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with people of limited English speaking ability.

Minimum Requirement:

  • Nursing experience in a hospital, doctors office, clinic or health agency.

Desirable Qualification:

  • Experience as a School Nurse, Public Health Nurse, or Pediatric Nurse.

Education/Credential Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from an accredited college or university. Preliminary School Nurse Credential or ability to obtain Preliminary School Nurse Credential.

  • Health and Developmental Credential, or Standard Designated Services Credential with specialization in Health or Services Credential with specialization in Health (Ryan).

Desirable Qualification:

  • Valid California Clear School Nurses Credential

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Occasional exposure to dust, pollen, and fumes

  • Requires frequent reaching, handling, sitting, standing, walking, hearing, talking, stooping, bending, crouching, kneeling, running, carrying, and lifting 50 or more lbs.

  • Must be able to see and hear within normal range with or without correction.

  • The noise intensity level is moderate to high
