Position Description: The High Temperature Polymeric Materials and Ablatives Group serving the Nonmetallic Materials and Space Environmental Effects Branch (EM41) at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, AL has an opening for a Ceramic and Polymer Materials Engineer.

This engineering role will be part of a strong and high performing team of approximately 30 team members, including: engineers, technicians and interns. As a contributor on this team, the selected individual will provide support for formulation, development and testing of ceramic coatings, polymer foam insulation and high temperature polymer materials for use in propulsion systems. This includes: qualification of coatings, rubber material formulation, configuration development and processing, test bed development, design and production, hardware production, materials testing in a Plasma Torch Test Facility, installation into test motors, and insulation and nozzle materials testing.

Other materials and components to be developed, fabricated, and tested include: phenolics, composites, elastomers, coatings, paints, primers, and liners. Responsibilities: Serve as a technical specialist in conducting in-house application research and development efforts in support of ceramic and polymeric coatings and materials.

Work according to, and develop, standard operating and safety procedures. Collaborate on a multi-disciplinary team to achieve project success and delivery in a specified timescale. Develop test plans and provide oversight for the processing and manufacturing of nonmetallic materials such as coatings, paints, primers, rubbers, and composites.

Will also work with, adhesives, phenolics, elastomers and liners, as required. Use computers and computer software daily to generate reports, gather data and communicate test results. Interface with Engineering and Science Services Capabilities Augmentation (ESSCA) engineers, ESSCA technicians, and NASA customers as part of their daily duties.

Here's what you'll need: A degree in Materials engineering, Mechanical engineering or related engineering field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred.

Typically, educational and experience requirements are the equivalent of a BS with at least 30 years' experience, Masters with at least 28 years' experience or Ph.D. with at least 24 years' experience. The candidate is required to have outstanding technical experience or qualifications in one or more of the following areas: Strong knowledge and background in Materials Science and Engineering.

Highly organized with demonstrated skills to simultaneously coordinate and manage multiple projects to full completion. Adapting to the changing environments of technology development, while maintaining and gaining certifications for critical processes. Working in a team environment with other technicians and engineers, providing ideas and recommendations on improving testing/processing, operation and safety.

Proficiency with using computers and applicable software to gather, store and recall testing data and communicate testing results and reports. Implement machine commands for test execution and data collection. Communicating verbally and in writing: work, test status, test results, problems, and proposed actions with engineers, customers, and government representatives.

Ability to thoroughly document findings and actions is essential. A highly qualified candidate will have some or all of the following experience: General processing and manufacturing of nonmetallic materials (ceramics, foams, polymers, composites, adhesives, rubbers, paints) or direct experience with materials and production.

Manufacturing process control. Independently troubleshooting laboratory research materials problems, identifying appropriate corrective actions, and implementing corrective actions upon approval. Production and testing of aerospace hardware, specifically, solid rocket motors.

Project management. ASTM test methods, coating methods, adhesive bonding, critical cleaning, machining, and precision measurement. Work will be performed on-site at NASA/ Marshall Space Flight Center (60%). Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%). Requires the ability to operate materials test equipment (20%). Attendance: Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Paid overtime during the week and weekends may be required to meet schedules (50% max). Attendance and being prompt is important to provide continuous service to the customer; adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences is required.

Regular attendance and punctuality are mandatory for meetings and other planned occasions. (100%). Other Essential Functions:The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
