Under general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, provide support to the Diagnostic Clinical Laboratories and act as a central point of delivery and shipment of samples. Specimens will be accessioned, processed and sent to the appropriate laboratory for further processing or sent out to reference laboratories.
Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
May require standing for extended periods of time.
May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time.
Specific hazards of the position are listed in the VMTH Safety Training document and are reviewed with the incumbent annually.
Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
May require working with or around areas with hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases.
Occasional overtime, work variable hours/days on short notice, weekends and/or holidays. Availability to work 8 to 10 hour shifts.
Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.
Work in a busy hospital laboratory and teaching environment.
Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

Experience working in a diagnostic laboratory setting as a hospital lab assistant or hospital lab technician.
Oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and diplomacy to interact with a diverse group of people: faculty, clients, residents, researchers, students, and staff regarding samples.
Knowledge of hematological tests on animal blood and body fluids.
Knowledge of principles, procedures, and theories of clinical chemistry and hematology tests.
Experience with different anticoagulants used for collecting diagnostic specimens.
Experience with sterile technique to prepare uncontaminated solutions and specimens for microbiological analysis.
Skills to work independently, while also being able to function as part of a team.
Skills to preparing cover-slip specimens.
Skills to use pipettes for sample processing.
Knowledge to follow existing laboratory protocols and to modify existing procedures where necessary to meet changing laboratory needs.
Knowledge of laboratory quality control and quality assurance.
Knowledge to utilizing a biosafety hood and aseptic techniques.
Basic computer skills.
Record keeping skills.
Skills to be flexible and handle several tasks simultaneously. Skills to organize and prioritize workload.
Experience with UC data systems such as, but not limited to, Veterinary Information Portal and Educational Resources (VIPER), Veterinary Medical & Administrative Computer System (VMACS), Infoshare and Laboratory Information System (LIS).
Experience with the structure and function of the VMTH Diagnostic Clinical Laboratories.
Experience with UCD, UCOP and the VMTH staff policy and procedures.
Ability to learn sample requirements for the laboratory.
Experience entering and recording data in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines.
