Position: CEI Senior Bridge/Roadway Inspector

S&ME, Inc., provides construction inspection services, planning, environmental, and design, for traditional and alternative delivery transportation projects, from concept through construction. The Transportation Business Unit is seeking a full-time Senior CEI Bridge/Roadway Inspector to join our team for projects based in our Greensboro, North Carolina location.

Senior CEI Inspector Responsibilities:

  • Perform technical duties associated with the oversight, administration and inspection of transportation projects, including roadway, bridge, rail, pedestrian, port, and /or aviation, to determine contractor's compliance with the contract, plans and specifications;

  • Observe and inspect various contractor's operations to include clearing and grubbing, earthmoving, paving, concrete pavement, bridge construction, pipe installation, traffic control, pavement marking, etc.;

  • Position may serve as a supervisor/technical resource to lower level staff;

  • Work is subject to review by higher-level professional staff;

  • Materials sampling and testing;

  • Prepare material reports and daily diaries;

  • Perform a variety of calculations, computations and documentation associated with the project inspection and material testing;

  • Inspect erosion control devices for plan and permit compliance;

  • Verify line and grade with survey equipment;

  • Prepare field books for contractor payment documentation;

  • Attend meetings and interact with third party construction personnel;

  • Perform DBE and EEO compliance surveys.

CEI Inspectors are subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and to various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites and heavy equipment, and may travel/work extended hours, weekends and/or holidays.

Pay rate is based on level of experience. Additional incentives are available for existing applicable certifications.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED required and 7+ years of highway related construction or inspection experience, or a 2 year technical degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology or higher with 5+ years of highway related construction or experience;

  • Ability to function in a full supervisory role for direct reports. May require ability to perform/supervise several administrative functions or supervise a separate function of considerable complexity;

  • Four (4) or more DOT-based certifications required;

  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification, or other materials certifications preferred;

  • Ability to lift between 40-50 lbs.;

  • Math and technical writing skills.

This is a full-time position with competitive pay based on experience. Successful candidate must meet requirements of the company's Fleet Management Program, Substance Policy and Reference check program. Company: Sloan Construction SUMMARY: A craftsman with extensive skill and experience level, able to manage a crew consisting of carpenters, finishers, and laborers to safely perform construction tasks. BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: * Job requires ability to perform tasks on all areas and aspects of construction project, including the ability to work with tools, lumber, and materials. * Basic Carpentry as it relates to the building and bracing of wooden forms and falsework. * Drive Pile – must be able to work off the ground positioning pile in leads, climbing ladders up to 60 feet. * Steel and Concrete Girder Erection – must be able to work off the ground assembling and guiding girders into final position, including handling as needed to preset. * Able to clearly explain steps, provide clear directions and answer questions while organizing subordinates. * Able to properly train subordinates on the tasks being performed. * Able to work and supervise others in a safe manner within the guidelines of the company's policies. * Have mathematical and analytical skills necessary to do timesheets, including quantities. * Able to read and check grades. * Able to identify potential schedule conflicts, and problems and communicate with Supervisor. * Able to read blueprints and assist Supervisor with formulation of work plan. * Be able to successfully train a replacement. * While supervising a crew, be able to communicate, inspect, handle conflict, and follow directions. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: * Able to read plans, perform simple layout with minimal supervision. * Plan and schedule own work and crews on a daily/weekly basis. * Perform multiple technical skills – proficient in four (4) areas of structural operations: * Steel Erection * Form/Construct Overhangs * Substructure Concrete * Pile Driving * Understand the basics of cost control, equipment operations and project requirements. * Effectively manage the work plan and a crew of 5-6 employees with minimal supervision. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: * Must be able to work off the ground and elevated heights. * Ability to lift and manipulate objects up to 80 lbs for 50 feet is required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: * 5+ years in bridge/heavy highway construction in Leadman/Lead Carpenter/Foreman role. * Some supervisory experience. * Valid Driver's License and good driving record required.
