Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

Legal Services: The Fellow will represent survivors of child sexual abuse, exploitation, and trafficking in a variety of civil, juvenile, and post-conviction matters.

The Fellow will serve as client-directed attorney for children under 21 involved in Chatham County Juvenile Court foster care dependency proceedings and who are participants in-or eligible to participate in-the state's first and only treatment court for survivors of child trafficking. The Fellow will also represent survivors in post-conviction vacatur and record restriction cases involving convictions directly resulting from or occurring during trafficking victimization, as well as in civil claims against perpetrators of child sexual abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. As part of the University of Georgia's mission to prepare law students for practice, the Savannah Fellow will supervise law students in providing legal services.

The Fellow will work under the supervision of the CEASE Staff Attorney. The Fellow is responsible for working together with the Staff Attorney and Clinic Director to ensure the effective management of CEASE's legal practice in Savannah. The Fellow will also work closely with the CEASE Clinic's Social Work Advocate to ensure intensive case management services for clients in the area.

Community Outreach & Education: The Savannah Fellow will be charged with building community relationships and networks in Savannah and surrounding areas through outreach, education, and other initiatives. Community outreach and education includes, but is not limited to, representing CEASE on the child trafficking treatment court multidisciplinary team; referring survivors to community-based services; collaborating with victim-services providers, placements, and other community members and organizations working with survivors; building a pro bono network in Savannah and surrounding counties to increase post-conviction relief legal services in the area; and developing and conducting trainings for attorneys and other advocates working with survivors.

This is a grant-funded position. Continuation after the end of the project will be dependent on the allocation of external or internal funding. The Fellow position is a one-year appointment and will require travel to Athens, GA as requested by the supervising Staff Attorney.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and seek guidance when appropriate.

  • Advocacy skills, excellent writing skills, and experience working with varying and vulnerable clients.

  • Georgia Bar admission is required upon the date of hire.

Serve as co-counsel with the director and/or staff attorney in litigation on behalf of the clinic, including, but not limited to communicating with courts and opposing counsel; drafting and filing pleadings; appearing at hearings on behalf of clients; legal research and writing on behalf of clients; providing guidance and feedback on student work; supervising students in hearings if deemed appropriate and assigned by the staff attorney; performing client intake; drafting and sending client advice, referral, and closing letters; and assisting with clinic attorney consultation services.

Percentage of time 70 Duties/Responsibilities

Undertake research and writing projects on behalf of the CEASE Clinic as assigned by the staff attorney.

Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities

Engage in community outreach and education on behalf of the clinic, including, but not limited to speaking at or attending bar or law conferences, community events, and stakeholders meetings.
